California may become the first state in the country to require warning labels on soda.
Activists say sugary soft drinks can contribute to diabetes and obesity but soda manufacturers strongly disagree, and promise to see this battle to the end. Soda and other sugary drinks are the number-one source of added sugar in the American diet, according to Dr. Harold Goldstein, of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy.
The average American reportedly consumes 45 gallons of soft drinks a year.
SB1000 would require the warning on the front of all beverage containers with added sweeteners that have 75 or more calories in every 12 ounces.
The label would read: STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.
Democratic Sen. William Monning, who proposed the bill, said there is overwhelming research showing the link between sugary drinks and those health problems, adding that the wording was developed by a national panel of nutrition and public health experts.
The bill has the backing of the California Medical Association and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy.

“The average American reportedly consumes 45 gallons of soft drinks a year.”
If that is true, I wonder who is drinking 90 gallons, since I drink 0 gallons. I call BS on that statistic.
This is what One Party Rule looks like.
Two people are drinking a quart a day to make up for our lack of consumption.
Also add the Warning - Living in the State of California will contribute to the decline in your ideas of Freedom, the legitimate role of Governament as well as the amount of money you are allowed to keep of your earnings.
Add that to the label and see what the legislature says.
Same here for our family of five. My kids have literally never had the stuff.
Good on them.
It is even worse now than when I was young. Aspartame and high fructose corn syrup are not on my menu. But that is my choice. For those who like it that is their choice. People who are unaware of softdrink uselessness don’t read warning labels. Another pointless nanny bill. The warning labels on a step ladder weigh more than the ladder.
We need a warning label for California: ‘This state is known to create crazy laws that’ll force you to pay more taxes, cost more money and create more government. If you love freedom, ignore the Liberals.’
I guess they fixed all the water issues, iklegal immigration problems, amd bankrupt cities in the state and can now move on to the really important problems.
This says more about the pricing of bottled water than it does the pricing of soft drinks.
