EAST HAVEN >> A 53-year-old woman received a call Thursday and was told her brother was being held captive and would be shot unless she complied with the callers demands.
The frightening call is like a scam Milford police have been investigating recently with a similar description and story-line. So far no arrests have been made as a result of that investigation, but police have said the scam is costing victims thousands of dollars.
It was about 6 p.m. when the woman, who asked not to be named, received the call. She said she was washing dishes when the phone rang.
The man started by saying he had been in an accident with the womans brother. The damage, he said, was at least $6,000.
And he didnt want the cops involved because his brother was an illegal immigrant, she said. But he said he would take $2,000 for the damage.
The woman said the caller told her brother would be shot if she didnt follow his directions.
She said she usually isnt gullible, but the call seemed real enough to demand her attention.
He was real, he knew the part she said. He wasnt reading off a piece of paper.
On Feb. 4, Milford police issued a press release saying that a scammer with the same routine had taken more than $3,000 from two other victims.
The woman, who has lived in East Haven for 24 years, said she didnt give him any money because of some speedy dialing.
