Workers at a Volkswagen factory in Tennessee have voted against union representation, a devastating loss that derails the United Auto Workers unions effort to organize Southern factories.
The 712-626 vote released late Friday stunned many labor experts who expected a UAW win because Volkswagen tacitly endorsed the union and even allowed organizers into the Chattanooga factory to make sales pitches.
The UAW for decades has tried without success to organize a foreign-owned plant in a region thats wary of organized labor. The loss now makes it even harder for the union to recruit members at another Southern factory.
If they cant win this one, what can they win? asked Art Schwartz, a former General Motors labor negotiator who now is a consultant in Ann Arbor, Mich.
UAW President Bob King, in a 2011 speech to workers, said the union has no long-term future if it cant organize the Southern plants.
King, however, stuck to statements he made earlier that the union would seek a vote and respect any decision made by workers.
While we certainly would have liked a victory for workers here, we deeply respect the Volkswagen Global Group Works Council, Volkswagen management and IG Metall for doing their best to create a free and open atmosphere for workers to exercise their basic human right to form a union, King said in a statement.
So now forming a union is a basic human right?
Yeah, just like the basic human rights to murder your unborn child and live off the taxpayers.
The union membership is so old now, the only ones left are hip breakers!
My paternal grandfather was born in 1888, immigrated to this country and went straight into the coal mines at age 13. He worked in some horrendous conditions but, according to family lore, had arrived at the same conclusion by the 1950s. He felt not only had the unions outlived their usefulness, but they would ultimately kill the golden goose.
Those "good old boy rednecks" up in Tennessee and other parts of the South are more likely to "do" leg breaking than to be recipients of same.
I really love my tagline (see below). However, your post made me think (for a minute) that it would be just as accurate for it to be , “MSM..We print the news as it fits our views.” It really fits in that form, doesn’t it?
Hey, anyone who wants it...be my guest. MSM I mean.

“...would make it an international issue and declare TN backwards, redneck...”
Elsewhere in the media it has already happened. The Slimes
called the Southerners “hereditarily anti-union” in this
story.
In elitespeak, this means, Well shucks Gomer. I iz dun
know bout anything helps us beein a communist country.
It seems hard to believe the union didn’t demand, in the finest democrat party tradition, a recount, the first step to stealing the election.
It was “unexpected”. Everyone take a drink.
The Saturn cars were made in Spring Hill, TN, south of Nashville and at least 100 miles from Chattanooga.
Thx.
