Ann should know better than to think that "beyond the pale" has anything to do with "pale" used of skin color. That "pale" is derived from the Latin pallidus, meaning pale, wan, or pallid.

"Beyond the Pale" originally meant the part of Ireland not under effective English control--"pale" deriving from the Latin palus, stake.
