Imagine going to the dentist for a free regular checkup, and getting a free $25 gift card in return. It’s happening right here in Pennsylvania, and taxpayers are paying for all of it. Every year, Pennsylvania spends $20 billion to provide medical care to low-income and disabled residents. But one of the biggest problems the state has is getting people to use those medical services for preventative care. Now a new program designed to address that problem has some people outraged. "I am upset." Michelle Tonkin is seeing red thanks to a Walmart gift card, which she recently got in the mail. “I thought it was a joke at first. I really, really did,” explained Tonkin. Tonkin’s daughter, Molly, has an intellectual disability. For the last 20 years, she’s been on Gateway, a form of Medicaid.

It seems they don't. We watch our local news every night, and we like to compete to find the onscreen spelling mistakes. There's at least one in each broadcast. It drives me nuts.

Catherine, I empathize with you. Mostly my eyes spot the spelling errors in what I read online. Obviously, many are not typos which could be fixed with a quick editing.
On TV I am stuck with noticing frequent grammatical errors. I expect better from those in the media business.
I remind myself that everyone has their good points and that some of those rank higher than perfect English.

I’m a dental hygienist in PA and have worked in offices that accept welfare patients. First of all, they rarely show up for their appointments, so the dental offices frequently double book appointments. Even when they DO show up, they frequently show up late. Also, they will show up with a bunch of kids, whom they expect the office staff to entertain. Many dental offices will schedule a “welfare day”, where only welfare patients are seen. They tend to be disruptive to the “regular” patients and scare them away. Please don’t call me racist. I’ve seen the same behavior from redneck “mountain folk” as I have from people in more urban areas. I live in the east suburbs of the Pittsburgh area.
My parents patronize a dental practice in Florida known as “Tooth Acres.”
I need to be more charitable, LOL.
IMO, this is the result of kids never being introduced to books and reading. They grow up without seeing the correct use of the language.
Since having a stroke and developing epilepsy because of the stroke my spelling and proof reading have gone to hell. Some people need to find better things to bitch about.
The welfare dental plans used to reimburse the dentist for up to 3 crowns and 3 root canal procedures per year @ up to $600 for each procedure. They quit doing that about 3 years ago. Now, if you have a toothache, you have to get the tooth extracted. Even if it’s a front tooth. Teeth are getting restored with huge silver fillings for the back teeth. No, welfare doesn’t pay for tooth color fillings in back teeth! I can see why they want these people to have preventive care. They want to avoid paying for restorative procedures. These people constantly walk around with a 1/2 gallon jug of sweetened iced tea or bottle of Mountain Dew or Red Bull in their hands. They go days without brushing their teeth, even when you give them a toothbrush, floss and toothpaste. It’s an uphill battle. They just don’t care. The only thing they care about is getting a prescription for Vicodin if they have a toothache.
Muggs, I'm truly sorry to hear that. But my criticism wasn't meant for someone in your situation.
I singled out so-called professionals whose job it is to create screen captions for a TV news program. Surely they can expect to be held to a certain standard of literacy.
Maybe I over-reacted but I have seen so many freepers jump on any error that at times it just bothers me. It’s horrible to forget how to spell words I have known my entire life.
It must be very hard, muggs. My mother died of a stroke. She didn’t live long afterward, but I know the bizarre things it can do to the brain.
