U.S. Treasury Says Iran Helping Al Qaeda in Syria
Daily Star ^ | Feb. 7, 2014

Iran is assisting key Al-Qaeda figures to transfer Sunni fighters into Syria, the Obama administration charged Thursday.

The accusation, detailed in new sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury department targeting Iranian terror links, indicates Iranian officials are backing opposing sides in the Syrian civil war.

Olimzhon Adkhamovich Sadikov, described by the Treasury Department as an Iran-based Islamic Jihad Union facilitator who “operates there with the knowledge of Iranian authorities,” was designated for providing logistical support and funding to Al-Qaeda’s Iran-based network.

-excerpt-

Sadikov, also known as Jafar al-Uzbeki and Jafar Muidinov, serves as a “key extremist smuggler based in Mashhad, Iran, near the country's border with Afghanistan, and has provided visas and passports to numerous foreign fighters, including Al-Qaeda recruits, to facilitate their travel," the Treasury said, adding that “he assisted extremists and operatives transiting Iran on their way into and out of Pakistan and Afghanistan,” the Treasury said.

Our government is also supporting Iran atom program with feigned “failed pleas” with money to stop them... in the name of opening talks and reset buttons.... a nice fund raise on emotional air.

Alleged perp’s name is heavily russified indicating a Sunni ethnic Uzbek.
It is extremely unlikely that said person could cooperate with Iranian authorities who are backing Assad’s government against Al-Qaeda.
But even if these allegations are true, Iran has to work really hard to outhelp Obama.

Not stupid, it’s the truth.
Another example of why people say the ME is a very complicated place.

The general tenor of the comments to this Lebanese (Christian?)-authored article is of disdain for U.S. intelligence. This story smacks of clumsy CIA misinformation. It’s one more reason for the U.S. to stay out of Muslim politics, except to protect Israel: bunker-busting bombs for Israel, etc.

Having read the comments to your link, Iran may figure that AQ will expend much of their efforts fighting the U.S.-backed FSA. Additionally, a strong AQ presence in Syria removes political cover from potential direct U.S. intervention. Iran may have even dictated how the AQ units they finance are deployed, as they do in Afghanistan.

What did they expect, Iran to obey the law? It’s a little like being surprised that Al Capone ran Chicago from jail.

At least some in Treasury are keeping an eye on the bad guys, while some at DOJ are freeing them.

Gee, I wonder who I could be referring to?

It is more that a full time job to follow what is happening in Syria.

Almost every day on my Twitter feed, I come across allegations that the jihadis operating in Syria- in particular, the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS) or “al-Qa’ida” more generally (by which Jabhat al-Nusra is meant as well)- are somehow in secret collaboration with the Assad regime, if not agents and creations of the regime.

Russia isn’t and believe it or not, the U.S. isn’t intentionally supporting them either.

Iran is the major sponsor of the evil in Syria.

Iran has to be stopped and charged under international law.
