De Blasio’s Vow to End Traffic Deaths Meets Reality of New York Streets
New York Times ^ | February 14, 2014 | By J. DAVID GOODMAN and MATT FLEGENHEIMER

Posted on 02/15/2014 3:58:08 PM PST by Brad from Tennessee

The announcement was bold, if somewhat quixotic: Mayor Bill de Blasio, whose campaign was focused on reforming the New York Police Department’s stop-and-frisk tactics, would commit his administration to reducing traffic deaths “literally” to zero.

In his administration’s first 40 days, that pledge translated into a series of ticket blitzes against drivers — and, in unusually large numbers, jaywalkers.

Jaywalking tickets are up nearly eightfold this year, despite the mayor’s insistence that his plan for safer streets did not include singling out pedestrians. Through Feb. 9, there were 215 jaywalking summonses issued, compared with 27 over the same period last year; tickets issued to drivers were down slightly. . .

Drop the speed limit to 2 mph (half of a good walking speed).

What I mean is Democrats seem to want to control every aspect of people, it seems.

Odd, for being ‘liberal’.

The mayor CAN'T believe that he can get people to CARE. People haven't changed...ever. They WILL do what they want to do, when they want to do it. It all goes back to Adam and Eve and original sin. We have a free will and some people CHOOSE the low road, Satan's purview, their own way, no matter what.

Zillions of police issuing zillions of tickets WILL only get everyone really, really ticked off at the police and folks WILL still drive and park when and where they want.
Robocop could stop them. Finally saw it last night. Good movie.

I remember seeing a side street that was marked as 'one way' and 'no outlet' or 'dead end' or something in South San Francisco, ages ago. I was driving a company truck; I decided not to risk having to leave a company vehicle in a huge backup of abandoned cars that might've been at the end of that street. :-)

Yup, no cars or trucks. Just bicycles and horse-drawn carts. Oops...the latter is now banned. Guess they’ll just have to hire teams of illegals to move the cargo.

Just put connecting walkways above all the streets. That way the pedestrians and cars won’t be at the same level. Sure it would be expensive, but that’s what the rich are there for, right?

He is going to eventually fail and fail miserably. Rudy Giuliani, a tough law and order disciplinarian had vowed to stop the throngs of people who navigate the city streets with abandon tried to do the same. He closed off many streets with police barriers forcing people to cross only at the corners. But with the huge number of people in the city leaving work nearly at the same time, forced the mayor give up only after three days. The difference is that this Mayor, a communist, might give people shoot to kill orders for anyone daring to jaywalk.

Aha! You see, these policies were left over from the Giuliani administration and backed by the Tea Party. De Blasio is actually helping these good citizens. So it's still the Republican's fault!

If the threat of getting run over by a car or truck doesn’t deter jaywalking, I seriously doubt a ticket will.

In Bangkok with its notoriously bad drivers and traffic jams, the city built “walk over” pedestrian bridges at all the bad intersections. No one is willing to climb up the stairs. Only the elevated walkway near Siam Paragon is used. The others are bypassed in favor of darting through traffic at extreme risk to life and limb. They frequently make it. ;-)

Yeah, the idiot ideologue who doesn't look up from his copy of the Commie Manifesto, who forced teachers and kids to travel to school under extremely dangerous conditions in a Nor'easter to watch films or do busywork---that's a real great start to traffic safety.

I finally went to New York in 2011. My husband and I always wanted to go there...and to Yellowstone. We had traveled the world but didn't know our own country.
So when he passed I decided to see those two places. I LOVED New York and now I know why they call it the Big Apple. It is a fabulous city. I would not want to live there as there are WAY too many people, but it IS fabulous.

I did also go, a week later, to Yellowstone. That is ALSO a FABULOUS place, as different from New York as two places could be but I loved it THERE too.

We DO live in a wonderful country, don't we?

This year I am going on a trip down the Mississippi River on a paddle wheeler, from Memphis to New Orleans, two more places I don't know.

Then, this fall, to Boston to see the changing of the leaves. I know my husband is looking down at me and happy that I am doing the things he and I had always wanted to do.

I visited NYC back in 1983.

And I live within shouting distance of Yellowstone but I don’t go there. Too damn many people.

I have only traveled half the world. Never been to the far east.

I took my wife on a drive for 10 days along the Oregon coast for our 20th five years ago.

And they say Columbus discovered a new world. Ha ha ha

Good on you CM.

Good on you.
