Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he voted to advance a clean debt-ceiling bill this week because his job is to protect the country when he can.
The Republican leader said at a Friday campaign event in Louisville, Ky., that he has long preferred making structural changes to fiscal policy as a condition to raising the debt ceiling.
But given that the House could pass only a clean debt ceiling every policy rider Speaker John Boehner tried to attach failed to garner sufficient support McConnell said he was left with one option: Avoid economic catastrophe.
McConnell and most of his leadership team voted to break a filibuster demanded by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), to the ire of many conservatives and surprise of Capitol Hill, given his recently stated opposition to any clean lift of the debt ceiling.
We were confronted with a clean debt ceiling in the Senate or default. I believe I have to act in the best interests of the country, and every time weve been confronted with a potential crisis, the guy youre looking at is the one who stepped up to solve the problem, McConnell told reporters, according to Associated Press video....

Our zero.
Another GOPe Zer0....
Ever seen a turtle run for cover like a cockroach when the lights are turned on?......This is as close as it gets!
So he really think increasing the debt limit is a good thing for the country while lying to the voters that he will fight against increasing debt
Yeah, bud. You really protecting the country with more debt than can be paid off for generations. And no end in sight.....
Who is he kidding?
No honor whatsoever.
Need to think strategically.
Fighting over the debt ceiling and shutting down the government again, would only hurt the Republicans just before the 2014 elections, when we have a chance of getting a majority in the Senate and keeping the House.
Need to keep our eye on the prize.
He who sees a fight and runs away.
Lives to run away, another day.
The USA used to have two (2) Parties.
Been a while.
But I am old enough to remember when.
Yes, instead of something divisive like not borrowing more money for our kids and their kids to pay, let’s keep the slate clean for important Repub issues like Amnesty for 30+ million undocumented, low income, low education, social safety net mooching soon to be Democrats.
That for sure will help the Republican Party....make tens of millions more Democrat voters.
Pretty clear the Repub leadership is working for the other Side...Obama’s Opposition Research arm, the NSA sure must be good for finding blackmailable dirt..
Only time the Repub Leadership do something for the Repub Base, is to give the Base the finger. When you have both the Repub leadership and the Dem leadership opposing the Repub base desires, you have One Party Rule.
Amnesty passes, the Constitutional Republic the USA was founded as, dies. And the USA becomes the USSA or some Fascist Police State version thereof.
The gentleman from Kentucky has a very robust opinion of himself, one that I (and many of my cohorts) do not share. May he soon find himself delivered of his duty to us.
Did you say that in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012? Will you say that again in 2016, 2018, etc? Where will your line of reasoning take us? I'll tell you where. Over a financial cliff!
The House and Senate GOPe spineless "leadership" has to go.
Much as I detest McCain and wasn’t enthusiastic about Romney, I voted for them in the general election — if conservatives had turned out, we wouldn’t have Obama as president.
Also — in some areas the Tea Party ran unelectable candidates, that’s why the Dems got control of the Senate.
People need to get over knee-jerk reactions and start thinking strategically or we’ll face a permanent Dem control, moving fast towards communism in this country.
“The House and Senate GOPe spineless “leadership” has to go.”
One more thing — why do “conservatives” totally focused on unseating and defeating Republicans, instead of Democrats???????????:
you have it exactly backwards. If the arrogant GOPe wouldn't run Statist they would be a reason for Conservatives to vote.
Also in some areas the Tea Party ran unelectable candidates, thats why the Dems got control of the Senate.
So it's the TEA Party's fault the RATs got the Senate. Utter arrogant B.S. Spoken like a true GOPe puke. Is that you Karl Rove?
You obviously think the Statists the GOP has put up these past 12 years are much different that RAT Statists?
The end game with the Bushies and the Roves and the Romneys is the same as the RATs -- just at different speeds.
You surely don't belong on a site dedicated to limited government and a belief in our Constitution.
You sound like an arrogant inside the beltway elitist.
2012 was the very last time I will ever cast a vote for a RINO Statist. Believe me if the idiots in the GOPe somehow foist Jeb or Christie or any other RINO I will gladly and with a very clear conscience NOT vote in 2016.
You can take your lesser of two evils and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.
Strategic??? My God, you just don't get it.
Er, who said anything about defeating Republicans? Primary the spineless and get them out of the way.
With your line of specious reasoning we will maintain the status quo into financial oblivion (See the most-recent votes by the Republican "leadership." THEY VOTED WITH THE DEMOCRATS!!!!!!!!!!!)
Yes, McConnell, it’s your patriotic duty to suffocate America’s children with debt — you dumb ass.
Primary the traitorous RINOs!!!
>> People need to get over knee-jerk reactions and start thinking strategically
I’d rather deal with an honest adversary.
Boy is his backside smarting. Cruz whipped him good.
