Editorial: We recommend John Cornyn in GOP primary for the U.S. Senate (LSM Endorsement)

Sen. John Cornyn is a principled lawmaker whose brand of Texas conservatism makes him the best choice in this eight-way GOP primary race for the Senate.

Cornyn is the deputy GOP Senate leader and a senior Republican on the Judiciary Committee. Holding these positions of influence can only bode well for Texas. Cornyn, 62, also has long supported immigration reform, which we think is important, though at times in recent years he’s not been as much a problem solver on this issue as we’d like.

Still, unlike his challengers, he’s committed to governing, having recently won additional funds for rape test kits, and he’s a champion for reforming drug-sentencing laws. Cornyn has clear conservative fiscal stripes; he co-sponsored a Balanced Budget Amendment and opposed the Affordable Care Act before it became law.

The other candidates are less informed, little known and generally offer extreme, vague or impractical ideas. Several are particularly intemperate.

South Texas businessman Chris Mapp, 53, told this editorial board that ranchers should be allowed to shoot on sight anyone illegally crossing the border on to their land, referred to such people as “wetbacks,” and called the president a “socialist son of a bitch.” Ken Cope, 60, a retired aerospace executive, wants to build a fence along the entire border and deport anyone who fails to learn English. U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman has run a clownish campaign with the baseless claim that Cornyn supports the Affordable Care Act.

Cornyn can be fored into a primary and destroyed. This is the canary in the coal mine, and we must see victory. We have candidates that are not very well prepared here. If we can defeat Cornyn in Texas, Mississippi and Knetucky could be easy.

Cornyn voted for cloture for Amnesty, Obamacare, Debt Ceiling along with the democrats. Why should the DMN dump him if Cornyn is giving Obama, Pelosi and Reid everything they want?

The Houston Comical will endorse Coryn too if they haven't already. The only reason I continue to take that paper is to see who died and for them to tell me who I should vote for, so I can vote the opposite way.

They want Davis for governor, I can't imagine Dem supporters wanting anything but a true liberal with the D after his/her name (even though they love to try and force RINOs on Repubs).

It just seems like a setup to help Dems try to keep a true conservative from winning.
