Often Called ‘Presidents’ Day,’ But Really Washington’s Birthday
PBS ^ | Sunday, February 16, 2014 | Transcript

HARI SREENIVASAN: Finally tonight – the connection.

As far as everyone is concerned, tomorrow is Presidents’ Day, and many of the advertisements would lead you to believe that it’s a celebration of two of America’s greatest presidents: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

[TELEVISION COMMERCIALS]

But despite what almost everyone believes, tomorrow is not a national holiday known as Presidents’ Day, even the Interior Department apparently isn’t in on the secret.

Under a federal law passed in 1968, the third Monday of February was officially designated as “Washington’s birthday.” No mention at all of honest Abe.

HAROLD HOLZER: Lincoln has never had a national holiday devoted to him.

HARI SREENIVASAN: Harold Holzer is a Lincoln scholar and the author or editor of more than 45 books. He was also a consultant on “Lincoln,” the Academy Award-winning film from 2012.

We don’t get President’s Day off because my firm is Atlanta based and chose to give us Martin Luther King Day..... because he’s more important than our founding father didn’t you know?

It is a disgrace that we have a Martin Luther King day, but not a day to honor George Washington. Instead we pack all the presidents into a single day and include in that day giving honor to scoundrels and cowards like Bill Clinton and Obama.

George Washington deserves an entire month. February should be George Washington month. Instead it is Black History month.

There was a holiday for Lincoln in the 1950’s, in the America that I grew up in, even in Louisiana- whether it was a federally sanctioned holiday was not generally known. All of the calendars showed Feb 12 as Lincoln’s Birthday.

Glenn Beck this morning in New York said that if he were to ask on the street a question such as: “Why do you think that we should have a holiday for Obama’s birthday today?”

Beck said many would answer that he Obama is entitled to have a Federal holiday such as his birthday and they are happy that it is a holiday for his birthday.

I remember being hacked off when they combined them into a Monday because Washington’s B;day was my Grandpa’s birthday as well. We always could celebrate the two together.

That PBS claim that Lincoln never got a national holiday because of bitterness over Reconstruction is so typically LIBERAL!

THEN....the Indian dude mentions the penny, the fiver, Mt. Rushmore (I think he left out the Lincoln Memorial). So we’re still a bunch of angry racists! Sheesh!

Give ‘em time - at the rate the denigration of our history is going on, we’ll soon have it changed to “Famous Person’s Birthday”.

Washington’s Birthday is February 22nd. It should be on February 22nd. That is what is wrong with America.

The Original, Right-Wing Extremist.

February 15, 2014 American War Hero, Patriot, Political News

President George Washington

One can reasonably presume how today’s Left would characterize and attack the person I am about to describe to you. Without a doubt, he would be characterized as some sort of dangerous, right-wing, tea-bagging, homophobic, Christian Neanderthal who should be maligned, attacked, marginalized, silenced, and driven from power.

Character assassination has become the weapon of choice for those who so forcefully peddle the liberal/progressive ideology. It is relentlessly used to silence all those who stand in opposition to the myriad of ‘isms’ they champion as they seek to “fundamentally transform” the country and society. I sincerely doubt they would spare him.

He was the commanding General of the Army and later a two-term president. Unwavering and dedicated, he had a deep-set of personal beliefs and never faltered from his chosen path.

He called morality “a necessary spring of popular government” and while in command of the army he ordered “vice and immorality of every kind discouraged.” Accustomed to undertaking daily devotions, he ordered worship for the army every Sunday and had twenty thousand Bibles imported for the troops. He even had the audacity to state “to the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.” Can you imagine how those who worship at the altar of the ‘separation of church and state’ would react to such actions and utterances?

He was devoted and married to the same woman his entire life and appears to have never fallen for the temptation of affairs or mistresses during his marriage. His army was probably the first in history to not have a large corp of camp followers filled with harlots and trollops following in its wake. He firmly forbade looting of any kind and quickly drummed out of the army those caught engaging in sodomy....

I’m Not interested in celebrating Obama day or Carter day or Clinton day.

I’ll celebrate when this clown is finally out of office where he can’t cause any further damage.

Well, sort of, it has been converted to that date. It was really Feb 11 when old George was born.....

Except there really ISN’T a president’s day at all. The holiday still IS technically “Washington’s Birthday.” Retailers and PC “can’t celebrate a dead white slave holder’s birthday” people are the ones who push and call it “president’s day” and the media egg them on, and gullible people now think it’s “President’s Day” where every president is honored. It’s not. It’s STILL “Washington’s Birthday” according to Federal law.

Many states DID have a Lincoln’s Birthday holiday, but it was never a federal one. And of course all calendar makers used to mark the day, and hopefully the still do.

Yes. I can see why it’s frustrating. But I guess they figured more people would want to have a 3 day weekend on that particular day. But really if they were going to designate a Monday celebration for the Holiday it should have been the FOURTH Monday in Feb. not the 3rd, because the latest date the 3rd Monday would ever fall is the 21st, which guarantees the day would NEVER be celebrated on the right day.

We don’t get it off in Tucson because of the rodeo parade (which really only schools get off).
