Helpers Needed
February 18, 2014
To some people, the term helper carries with it second-class connotations. Classroom helpers assist trained teachers in their classes. Helpers assist trained electricians, plumbers, and lawyers on the job. Because they arent as skilled in the profession, they might be viewed as having less value. But everyone is needed to accomplish the task.
The apostle Paul had many helpers in his work of ministry. He listed them in his letter to Rome (ch.16). He made special reference to Phoebe, who has been a helper of many and of myself also (v.2). Priscilla and Aquila risked their own lives for Paul (vv.3-4). And Mary, Paul said, labored much for us (v.6).
Helping is a spiritual gift, according to 1 Corinthians 12:28. Paul listed it among the gifts from the Holy Spirit that are given to believers in Christs body, the church. The gift of helps is just as needed as the others that are listed.
Even the Holy Spirit is called a Helper. Jesus said, The Helper, the Holy Spirit, . . . will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you (John 14:26).
In whatever ways the Holy Spirit, the Helper, has gifted you, let Him use you for His honor.
Dear Lord, thank You for the gifts You have
given me so that I might serve the
body of Christ. Help me to be faithful to use
my gifts to bring You glory.
You are a necessary part of the whole.

Back in the day new USMC recruits traveled by train to the small RR depot at Yemassee S.C., about 30 miles from Parris Island.
Once the train pulled out we were marched up a hill to a small receiving barracks where we waited for buses to transport us to the base.
While waiting for transportation we were taught how to field day a concrete floor on our hands and knees with water and sand.

Lt. Rufus G. Herring, USNR (MOH) LCI (G) 449
From Today in U.S. Military History:
17 February 1945 Iwo Jima
Citation:."For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as commanding officer of LCI (G) 449 operating as a unit of LCI (G) Group 8, during the pre-invasion attack on Iwo Jima on 17 February 1945. Boldly closing the strongly fortified shores under the devastating fire of Japanese coastal defense guns, Lt. (then Lt. (j.g.)) Herring directed shattering barrages of 40mm. and 20mm. gunfire against hostile beaches until struck down by the enemy's savage counterfire which blasted the 449's heavy guns and whipped her decks into sheets of flame. Regaining consciousness despite profuse bleeding he was again critically wounded when a Japanese mortar crashed the conning station, instantly killing or fatally wounding most of the officers and leaving the ship wallowing without navigational control. Upon recovering the second time, Lt. Herring resolutely climbed down to the pilothouse and, fighting against his rapidly waning strength, took over the helm, established communication with the engineroom, and carried on valiantly until relief could be obtained. When no longer able to stand, he propped himself against empty shell cases and rallied his men to the aid of the wounded; he maintained position in the firing line with his 20mm. guns in action in the face of sustained enemy fire, and conned his crippled ship to safety. His unwavering fortitude, aggressive perseverance, and indomitable spirit against terrific odds reflect the highest credit upon Lt. Herring and uphold the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service." |

I can only imagine. Quantico was enough hell for me.
And I was the sorriest guy in the platoon.
But it made a man of me...and I owe the USMC all that I have...except that which I have given to Jesus.
