Gun Ownership By Women Is Booming
The Inquisitr ^ | February 16, 2014 | Staff

Women gun owners are becoming a significant constituency in America.

As The Inquisitr previously reported, the number of women participating in gun sports, such as target shooting and hunting, has steadily increased over the last decade. Estimates of the number of US women who are purchasing and learning how to use guns range from 12 million to 17 million.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) claims that women are the fastest growing demographic of firearms enthusiasts.

This growth is occurring perhaps because of, or despite, controversial efforts at the federal and state level to enact additional gun control regulations.

CNN has reported that “Almost 80 percent of gun retailers reported a rise in female customers in 2012, according to industry figures. In Florida, 22 percent of the concealed carry permits are held by women. In Texas, women hold 28 percent of concealed carry permits, up sharply over the past decade.”

Even the pro-gun-control New York Times has acknowledged this trend: “In the debate over firearms regulations, the voices of gun owners have largely been those of men. But at firing ranges across the country, a growing number of women are learning to use firearms and honing their skills… Though they may share a fierce belief in the Second Amendment with their male counterparts, female gun owners often learn to shoot for different reasons, their interest in and proficiency with firearms not just a hobby or a means for self-defense, but a statement of independence and personal power.”

On a national basis, gun sale background checks have set a new record, with women buying guns for self defense and/or sport presumably accounting for at least some of the increase. In 2013, according to the FBI, there were about 21 million background checks as compared to about 19 million in 2012. States that enacted additional gun control laws have evenn seen a spike rather than a reduction in gun sales. Texas was responsible for the most background checks of all the 50 states. The Rosenberg, Tex., police department even suggested on its Facebook page that men give the lady in their lives a handgun for this year’s Valentine’s Day as a “gift of safety.”

To appeal to this growing female demographic, gun manufacturers are apparently bringing to market lighter-weight weapons with slimmer frames and even custom colors.

Separately in gun ownership news, this past week a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit threw out concealed-carry restrictions in California, although the decision is subject to further appeals.

Not only CC but rifles and shotguns also. It only takes one trip to the range and a few trial shots with a 22 or 223 and most want to fire the rifles. Most learn quickly and are good shots.

I really doubt that “Julia” is out buying a handgun.

She’s far too busy fundraising for Sandy Fluke’s Cali Senate bid.

Most of the women that I know who carry aren’t bothering to get the permit. They are all over forty or fifty and haven’t had a face to face conversation with a cop in over twenty years. The majority conceal the handgun in a cloth bag and keep it in their purse or coat pocket. Unless you knew specifically what you were looking for you’d never find it.

More young women see personal protection as a right, and a gun as a force equalizer, so they carry a gun to stop a would be rapist or robber. Some learned this from conservative kin, others who took self defense classes and decided to go even farther than karate.
Many older women who are divorced or never married are purchasing guns to protect themselves in response to increasing crime reports. I’m sure the black mob violence is adding to the furor.

Smart women; it’ll be a surprise for any thug and few juries think of convicting women who shoot someone who is trying to harm them.

Thankfully women are taking responsibility for their own well being. They aren’t planning on a man or a marriage or a police officer. To me, a gun is better than a knife or mace since after all, a thug can wear a mask or thick clothes and likely repel. A gun causes enough pain and harm to end up letting the woman get away. To me, avoiding close contact is another goal.

Way to go ladies,,,, my other half "Progunner", with all his patience and love taught me how to shoot before we were even engaged. We then taught our daughters. I DO NOT carry a "Ladysmith" or a snubbie 38. I carry one of my hubbies race guns "without the compensator" being a full size 1911 in 45acp. Keep it going fellow female gun totters,,,, this woman is on your side all the way.

Once I’m able, I’ll be sharing a bed with Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson. I think something fairly light, but not a pistol, I would prefer to be able to just jam the magazine right in and shoot. Not bothering to load each small individual bullet and I like the thought of having more bullets to fire.

Probably not, most likely a liberal has a hired bodyguard or a gun of their own though. I have learned one thing, and that’s this...

... Never take an anti-gun politician at their word, it’s pretty much always “Do what I say, not as I do” from them anyways.

I advise women to carry a revolver because there is no worries about releasing the safety, pulling the slide to load a round, a misfire or a jammed round. If a revolver doesn’t fire, pull the trigger again and it will.

In most cases your attacker will be so close that a miss almost has to be intentional. Yes, a lot of people don’t want to shoot another person and will miss intentionally hoping the noise will scare them away. Most of the time they are right but when they are wrong it generally turns out badly.

If you think you’re going to get into a gunfight bring your shotgun, not a measly handgun.
