“There just isn’t anything to “figure out here,” except how long the former officers spend in jail and how many millions the “good people of Hawthore” get to shell out.”

I’m a real believer in very large, painful punitive damages. Citizens won’t turn their backs to this kind of behavior when they have to pay for it. For smaller cities, one bad hit might make the city uninsurable; in big, self-insured cities, court settlements for this sort of thing is ALREADY a eight-approaching-nine-figure yearly line item. Taxpayers will notice this.

Totally agree!!! Seemingly, with the preponderance of self-absorbed people in this country today, most seeking a free lunch from the productive, the only thing that might get their attention is their city or town going broke. It’s sad, because it hurts the “innocent” along why the “guilty,” but this wanton abuse needs to stop! Beyond the financial penalties, the notion that the guilty cops get to skate has to stop as well. Only when they understand that jail is awaiting, will they modify their behavior. BTW Hawthorne is a $hit hole, I’ve been there. It’s right next to the LA Airport.
