The Russian punk-protest group Pussy Riot had pledged for months to seek to disrupt the Sochi Olympics, and has begun carrying through on that promise. But the group's latest attempt at a protest was dismantled almost before it began.

One day after members of the loosely-connected group were questioned in connection with some suspected thefts at a Sochi hotel, Pussy Riot gathered at a restaurant in downtown Sochi, about 20 miles from the Olympic village. The band attempted to begin performing, but was set upon by whip-wielding Cossack militiamen.

Oh yes. Russia has Cossacks, Ukraine has Cossacks as does Belarus. They are traditionally the light cavalry of the Steppe countries.

Amazing. Often I would picture them with those old-fashioned coats with the long boots and those fur hats.

Plus, you either need to shave the armpits regularly, or let em grow. Five ‘O Clock shadow is not a good look in that location.

Russian girls have wool...(from very very old joke)

Last night I started watching a long thing on youtube on the history of Ukraine in light of current events. Even from way back it has been a country tugged at from different directions.

The area was originaly called Rus (not to be confused with Russia). The Cossacks were originally guys that wanted freedom, including outlaws, etc. that lived out along some river (Dinebe?? or something out on the wilderness steppes). They would raid cities, etc. using boats. The name “Ukraine” had something to do with the Cossacks, and the idea of freedom. I wasn't taking notes so I'm sure I got some stuff wrong - but is very interesting.

In the video I was watching it showed the statue that the protesters in Kiev are camped out by, at that time surrounded by a beautiful park, trees, etc. Kiev was invaded and taken over by the Vikings in 900 AD or something - and they ruled and became assimilated into the region for hundreds of years!

I love how quickly they stop bouncing around as soon as they’re whipped.

As long as the skimask includes a cork or a large sock.

As in “Put a sock in it, lady”.

Real cossacks are on horseback and whip them with nagaikas, or use sabres to cut their hands off if they are raised in surrender.

Hey! They need more entertainers in Siberia! As for Cossacks, they are not on horseback. This stunt will get them more money from the west but win few supporters in Mother Russia. didn’t they listen to Czar Putin? He don’t like their message. Still, it shows that there is some freedom in Russia. PR Stunt only—the Cossacks look a bit drunk. Don’t they wear furry caps too?
