Russian nationalists where always outraged at Nikita Khruschev’s gift of Crimea to the Ukraine in 1954. Before that, it was part of Russia. And with the rise of fascist elements in Ukraine’s west, there’s a good chance Crimea may again become part of Russia in the future.
The peninsula is also home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.
