Raising the minimum wage could cost Illinois' cash-strapped universities millions of dollars in added wages for their student workforce.
With lawmakers warning of tough budget times in the fiscal year beginning July 1, the proposal to bump the wage from its current level of $8.25 an hour to $10 or more an hour is raising red flags among university officials.
At SIU, for example, President Glenn Poshard said an increase could cost his institution $3.2 million in additional wages at a time when the General Assembly may be considering further cuts in aid to high education.
"We need an increase in funding in higher education," Poshard told members of a House appropriations panel Thursday. "We don't have any extra to run our university."

um... solution...
give them services in lew of a salary, like... discounted tuition?
A smart university wouldn’t pay a DIME to any student.
Simply tow the liberal line and Obama will issue an executive order giving you an exemption from the law.
Well, that what he should have said.
Actually I’m a bit fuzzy on the exact wording of the EO, but could it mean that every student worker at every University that takes federal contracts now has to be paid the higher minimum wage? That would be devastating to budgets. And I would laugh my butt off.
This would not be connected to Barry’s EO.
It seems to be a state proposal.
No problem. Obama has a pen that will exempt anyone he pleases.
Bummer. That would have been extremely funny. I work at a college and the levels of caterwauling would have been incredible.
Maybe someone should suggest it to him?
I’m sure they’ll get a waiver if they ask dear leader for one. I think they would fall under the special favored category.

College Of The Ozarks aka Hard Work U
No tuition, every student has a job on campus, incredible wait list.
Of course it is politically conservative, to smart of a model for liberals
He is too busy ending his austerity...
These universities have billions invested. Reduce the pensions and the high salaries the teachers are getting so the poor can get a “living” wage.
Ha!
It’s so funny when the liberals at universities come up against a policy they all believe is wonderful.
Universities pay graduate teaching assistants, adjunct professors, and non-tenured professors very low wages compared to similarly educated workers in other fields. Not to mention support personnel. It’s not unusual to find teachers with MAs working for $10. per hour.
And the university administrations absolutely hate the idea of teachers joining unions to raise their wages.
