Four years after igniting a national uproar over immigration, the Arizona Legislature has jumped into the battle over gay rights with a piece of legislation that had opponents on Friday predicting business boycotts against the state.

The legislation allows business owners with strongly held religious beliefs to refuse service to gays, and all eyes are on Republican Gov. Jan Brewer as she decides whether to sign the bill. A decision is likely next week.

The conservative governor is already feeling pressure from the business community to veto the bill passed late Thursday. A prominent Phoenix group believes it would be another black eye for the state that saw a national backlash over its 2010 immigration crackdown law, SB1070. Opponents also pointed out that the legislation would serve as a major distraction as Arizona prepares to host the Super Bowl next year. …

For every bakery, caterer, photographer, limo driver, etc who refuses to accommodate gay weddings on religious grounds, surely there a dozens of others willing to fill that niche. That’s true diversity.

She had better sign this bill. It’s the ONLY conservative thing to do.

And it may give some much-needed courage to the Kansas Senate.

I heard on the radio some gay person say Christians should keep their religion in their homes. Now that’s ironic since gays aren’t keeping their sexuality in their home!

Keeping one’s religion in one’s home is not “free exercise thereof”. Therefore, no deal.

So true. If she signs, it will end up it court, and we'll be told the AZ legislature was “arbitrary and capricious,” or some other nonsense. Just as I select the businesses I wish to work with and reject others, a business owner has the same inherent right to refuse to accommodate me.

We used to be self-governing. What to do?

It’s not a blank check to “refuse service to gays”.<p.It’s a permission to not become part of celebrating homosexuality or furthering the agenda - call it First Amendment rights....

Stand tall and hold the line... gays are sick... ill... evil owns them. Pray for them but give them no rights beyond those codified in the Constitution for all. They are no better nor any more deserving of special rights than you or I. We are equal under the law or we are cuba/venezuela.

It’s all fun for liberals until a Muslim-owned business turns them away.
