That “midnight knock on the door” approach would only work a few times. After that, the poor schmucks assigned to carry out these raids would meet resistance. No, the individuals who shoot back wouldn’t win their particular fights, but neither would the guy who went through the door first. That 10-man death squad would become a 9-man squad; then 8, then 7... Their masters would very quickly discover that they’re no longer able to find someone willing to be the first through the door. And they would reach that point long before they could make a dent in the American gun owner population. And then it gets worse for them. The gun owners they miss would probably start a few midnight raids of their own.
And this, of course, is the purpose of the 2nd Amendment. It prevents the rise of violent tyrants by taking away the option of one-sided violence used against the People. You won’t see what’s happening in Ukraine happen here because it would never start. A million protesters armed with harsh language are one thing, but a million with AR-15s and AK-47s are quite another. No aspiring American tyrant would ever be willing to run the risk of provoking an armed uprising.
