Years ago, members of my extended family were gangsters connected with the Genovese crime family. They had the ability, which they used, to place people in favored positions within the New York City Police Department. I know this, because my father was offered one of those slots. --SNIP-- It's the old problem of "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?"—"Who watches the watchmen?"

When the 1% go to hide behind their gates as the economy collapses, can they trust their bodyguards not to be bribed?

A lot of wisdom there. I think this article illustrates a key difference between conservative voters and liberal ones.... Conservatives tend to have a realistic view of human nature, whereas the liberals I know—not particularly politically involved—naively assume they hear the truth from the news, and Democrat politicians....none of whom are as nasty (so they see) as Republicans....and seem so “nice” and optimistic...promising everything.

But assuming a politician—and the left-controlled media—is telling the truth....is a lot like assuming cops are angels of virtue, when they often are not. Checks and balances are a conservative idea, as conservatives, a lot more than liberals, accept the idea of original sin—namely that corruption comes from within, not primarily by institutions.

It is Marxist/Romantic thinking that says Institutions are corrupt, but the “little guy” is pristine... when “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (St. Paul in Romans 3:23)

Ironically optimistic Marxist/Romantic thinking about individuals, and the presumed virtue of the “little guy” give MORE power to government officials (of all stripes, police and other) supposedly to help the little guy...but this increases dramatically the possibility and probability of corruption of institutions.
