good question.
you can bet at some point someone will certainly try.
The elevator would have to be up for a couple of decades however before the shock and awe wore off.

What happens when terrorists fly planes into them? That is always a risk with any major endeavor, but should not change our resolve to innovate.

Depends. Top portion will remain stationary or go UP. The bottom portion will collapse.
Problem is if they are cut at high enough altitude, up to about the mid-point, when the bottom portion will collapses there will be enough wrap around the Earth. A lot of it should burn up, or otherwise come apart, though.

The cable would be so taunt that I doubt a plane could cut it. Wings are the
most fragile part of the craft, and the wings would just cut off. Seems logical.
