I’ve long been arguing that conservatives are generally right on principle, but tend not to be that smart when it comes to politics. Conversely, I believe that liberals are generally wrong on (or lacking in) principle, but tend to be pretty shrewd politicians.
One doesn’t have to look hard to find proof of this.
We live in a country in which nearly twice as many people describe themselves as conservatives as do liberals, and conservatives outnumber liberals in 47 of our 50 states. Yet, arguably the most liberal president in United States history won re-election after doubling our national debt, giving us a highly unpopular healthcare law, and leaving us with the weakest economic recovery since the Great Depression.

this article starts out like it is going to make a very intelligent point for us, but then refers to ‘50 states’ when we all know there are really 57 states...Dear Leader has so informed us so it must be True.
We need to turn the term 'progressive statist' into a curse that politicians avoid like they avoid 'racist, sexist, homophobe' today.
The founders used emotion to great affect. I don't know when we started thinking we had to be so cold & clinical. The left certainly never felt that way.
Last election name a conservative? ALL were sloppy liberal lite! ALL spewed some form of 'social justice'. NONE were able to speak to and for personal individual responsibility. I guess because NONE of them have that qualification.
You can narrow it down to three major things that are worth fighting for: God, family, country. The liberals are on the wrong side on each.
Well thought out, but here’s the problem ... most of America doesn’t think like we do. And those that don’t vote Dim and ain’t changing. Now don’t read into this that I think we should moderate. Not saying that at all. But rabble rousing (a la Ted Cruz) isn’t going to do much more than to get cheers from us ... and we aren’t enough.
We need to be smart and stop throwing everything at the wall. The problem is, we have ZERO leaders that I have seen.
Cruz is one of the best leaders we’ve had in a long, long time.

Agreed. Imho, we must as conservatives get behind and openly support him now.
Once upon a time, long, long ago, the Republican party stood for the same things Cruz stands for today. But the moderate, ie, leftist thinking RINO leadership has removed just about all principled positions from the platform. They’ve already given up on life, family, limited government. And now we have our GOP leadership supporting and voting for amnesty, big spending, big taxing, big debt and every bit of statism that comes to the floor. There is very little resistance or opposition to the left. And now the GOP wants to silence that. The GOP today is nothing but democrat-lite. No wonder they cannot gain enthusiastic support from the base. Keep up the great work. The tea party will be a real party sooner than they may wish for.
Cutting food stamps for cookies and sodas would be another good 'emotional' issue. Everyone I mention it to is enthusiastic, even most food stamp users aren't opposed (well, some druggie mothers- but none of them would vote Republican anyway).
Working people are vegemently supportive- they're sick of getting in line behind food stampers with carts full of treats the workers can't afford for their own children.
There are a number of things the GOP needs to do to win in 2014 and again in 2016. I would love to see a strict conservative message focused on smaller government, lower taxes, pro-life, pro-military and pro-gun messages. Ideally the GOP should also sing from the same hymnal and have a common message (not conflicting with each other). I disagree with virtually everything said by Democrats over the past 20 years but there is discipline to stay on message (no matter how wrong the message is — for example, the lie of the year that people can keep their plan with 0bamacare).
The GOP needs to focus on improving the economy, by supporting home=grown energy with the Keystone pipeline, clean coal mining and natural gas exploration and repeal of 0bamacare.
But what happens when the gifts run out? That’s perhaps something we can use.
The GOPe as we call it now and since they were called Rockefeller Republicans to Me-Too Republicans were get-along-go-along Republicans.
NOTHING has changed, nothing, except the consequences of going along with the winds of change. They were for Good Government and Smart Government yet, the conservative voice was received by the RINO ear as a check box to be filled with regurgitated talking points during an election cycle.
We are now at a critical stage. Mr. Goldberg is pointing a way to connect with Americans on a basic level. His commentary is a pleading for a simple change of method. The ship is capsizing.
The ‘e’ in GOPe stands for ‘eunuch’.
Well, all that means we should get up and campaign for good quality conservs. Also, we shouldn’t get into a circular firing squad-where backers of a particular conservative candidate do their best to stick it to another conservative. Such infighting doesn’t do out side any good.
