Fascism, Russia, and Ukraine
New York Review of Books ^ | February 19, 2014 | Timothy Snyder

(snip)

The protests in the Maidan, we are told again and again by Russian propaganda and by the Kremlin’s friends in Ukraine, mean the return of National Socialism to Europe. The Russian foreign minister, in Munich, lectured the Germans about their support of people who salute Hitler. The Russian media continually make the claim that the Ukrainians who protest are Nazis. Naturally, it is important to be attentive to the far right in Ukrainian politics and history. It is still a serious presence today, although less important than the far right in France, Austria, or the Netherlands. Yet it is the Ukrainian regime rather than its opponents that resorts to anti-Semitism, instructing its riot police that the opposition is led by Jews. In other words, the Ukrainian government is telling itself that its opponents are Jews and us that its opponents are Nazis.

The strange thing about the claim from Moscow is the political ideology of those who make it. The Eurasian Union is the enemy of the European Union, not just in strategy but in ideology. The European Union is based on a historical lesson: that the wars of the twentieth century were based on false and dangerous ideas, National Socialism and Stalinism, which must be rejected and indeed overcome in a system guaranteeing free markets, free movement of people, and the welfare state. Eurasianism, by contrast, is presented by its advocates as the opposite of liberal democracy.

The Eurasian ideology draws an entirely different lesson from the twentieth century. Founded around 2001 by the Russian political scientist Aleksandr Dugin, it proposes the realization of National Bolshevism. Rather than rejecting totalitarian ideologies, Eurasianism calls upon politicians of the twenty-first century to draw what is useful from both fascism and Stalinism.

Long confused essay if the writer believes that the Nazis were right wing.

... the realization of National Bolshevism. Rather than rejecting totalitarian ideologies, Eurasianism calls upon politicians of the twenty-first century to draw what is useful from both fascism and Stalinism.

Timothy Snyder is a leftist "professor" and author that objects to the "National" in National Socialism, and the "Bolshvism" in Bolshevist Socialism, and continues the false premise that Nazis are rightist.

In short, the meme is: Socialism has just been run by the wrong people, if we put the right people in charge, Socialism will make Europe a Utopia.

And sell his books.

the false premise that Nazis are rightist.

Right wingers want to preserve the past. Blood and soil ideologies are all about preserving the past. There is not a single right wing ideology, but a whole raft of them. Islamism, fascism, Nazism, American conservatism, British conservatism, Tibetan lamaism - all are right-wing ideologies. The fact that they're all classified as right wing doesn't mean that these isms are friendly or even compatible with each other. Rival right wing ideologies are frequently at each other's throats, as was the case during the Crusades. Ditto with left wing ideologies. In the book Liberal Fascism, Jonah Goldberg is being what the Brits call "too clever by half", or what I call a wiseass.

Right wingers want to preserve the past

That oversimplifies the conservative ideology. Conservatives understand social growth but deeply desire for society to grow at a pace established by that society, not a governmental entity. Facism wanted social growth to be established and dictated by a single entity, the State. That is where the "Right Wing" and Facism are polar opposites.

Right wingers want to preserve the past.

I could easily point out how left wingers want to preserve the past when the past is the Soviet block, Communist China, or Communist Cuba, and Western European Socialists charge exactly that against the Ukrainian government.

In fact, the Right is about LESS government, not about unlimited government with different nuances in bureaucracy to rule the proles.

Misidentification of the Right is about blame shifting frameups from the left, nothing more.

Correct, but is is more of a circle than a left-right continuum.

Pure Marxists believe that Communist Utopia will devolve into Anarchist Utopia once man has been sufficiently perfected.

I keep that chart on my “About” page and break it out as a learning/reference tool here on FR. Just the other day my daughter in high school had a teacher show a convoluted chart that I was certain was made by communist. It showed communist and liberals on the left and fascist and conservatives on the right. Since I had shown her this chart, she questioned the teacher (good for her).

Good for you both. Another fact to make Libtard heads explode is that Nazi is short for National Socialism by their own definition.
