Learning Spanish says to me you have accepted that Mexico and its ILLEGALS will be the majority. Surrender already then.

I took Latin in high school as well as Russian.
I live in a country who’s official language is English. I hate the fact that people come here to live and work (and use services but pay no income tax because they work under the table) and REFUSE to learn the language. Throw them all out. Send them back to the drug infested hell holes they came from
Tucson, Arizona is where Pima CC is. The people speak English. Very few do not speak English. Pima CC is already in hot water. I don’t expect this will help.
They’d be better off learning accounting, finance, computer programming. Then again, if they plan a career in landscaping, garbage hauling, fast food, etc. then it may be a good thing to do. I can’t think of an environment withing the United States I would want to stay in where only Spanish is spoken.
Actually you do. It happened back in the 1800s. All official correspondence and business of government is done in English.

Been trying to avoid this story as it makes my blood boil.
I recall a semester or two at Pima back in the 70s.
Don’t recall anyone speaking in Spanish, much less being forced to learn in Spanish...unless you were in a language class.
In fact, such a thing would have been considered absurd then, no matter what Raul Grijalva thought about it.

Neither is Ancient Greek. However, Bennett's Nursing Course is not a class in Spanish. It is a class in Nursing, in a tax-supported American institution. If the students cannot communicate in English, perhaps they should study nursing somewhere else.
BTW, Entry level Spanish is not that difficult to learn because it was designed that way. Think about it. You want to teach 16th C Incas, Mayas, Aztecs, Filipinos, etc. YOUR language in a hurry, you make it simple to follow simple orders and throw in "upon the pain of instant death." Voila. Spanish was the first European language to have standard grammar and spelling, and still has a "Tarzan-Jane" level for communicating with natives, which ain't gonna do you much good in biology or anatomy.
However, real Spanish as needed to study a technical subject is just as difficult and subtle as French, German, or Italian, and like them might take a few years to master well enough to study a subject like Nursing.
You might be suffering from "50s Think" when HS dummies were shunted into American HS Spanish. As a result, many a tourist with HS Spanish from the local high scrool has a hard time getting a glass of water in Spanish-speaking territory.
All of which is beside the point. School in English ... very important for "Americanizing" immigrants.
Speaking of "50s Think," Latin gives you a door to the romance languages. A nun told you that?

And no, I didn't go to a Catholic school. I did go to a private school though, where languages were required from grade 1 onward.

I hear you, though. And your experience at Pima wasn’t because there weren’t that many Spanish/Mexican descent students in our schools. I look at my ‘72 Cortez High School yearbook and there are a lot of Garcias, Ramirezes, Gonzalezes, and others. Also a lot of Japanese and Italian, for what it’s worth.
But we understood that learning and speaking in English was the way to get ahead in our world. The LaRaza and MeCha activists hadn’t gotten a real foot-hold yet.
Oh well...I still don’t speak any Spanish.
