White House Sets New Limits on Junk Food Ads in Schools: Part of Michelle's "Let's Move" initiative

The Obama administration laid out new restrictions on the marketing of junk food and sugary drinks in schools on Tuesday.

The new rules from the White House and the Department of Agriculture prohibit advertisements for unhealthy foods on school campuses during the school day, including sugary drinks that account for 90 percent of such ads in school. An ad for regular Coca-Cola, for example, would be banned from appearing on a scoreboard at a high school football game, though ads for Diet Coke and Dasani water, owned by the same company, would be allowed. Junk food ads like a Coca-Cola scoreboard would be phased out under the new rules and would not have to be replaced overnight.

“The idea here is simple—our classrooms should be healthy places where kids aren’t bombarded with ads for junk food,” First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement. “Because when parents are working hard to teach their kids healthy habits at home, their work shouldn’t be undone by unhealthy messages at school.”(continued)

So, when they’re busy banning sodas, because they’re terrible for us, are they also banning sports drinks and fruit juices, which are just as bad?

so now will we have federal bureaucrats visiting high school football stadiums, to make sure there are no offensive ads for Coke and Pepsi? We are really going down to that level??? Really?????

Judging from my neighborhood, I thought it was called the “Let’s Moo” movement.

The White House has no jurisdiction in schools. Only the executive branch.

“our classrooms should be healthy places”

Its not the classrooms Im worried about Michelle...

Its the cafeteria where you are experimenting with my grandchildren’s food...

60 years ago my mother would have been your Enemy Number One...

She sent me to school with a bag lunch...

She got to choose what was in it...

She didn’t call you for help...

Gosh how raciss of her...

Well, Michelle Obama is acting as if she has veto power over ads on school stadium scoreboards, of all things. Unless somebody stands up to them and refuses to go along, the White House will get away with things like this.

Not sure why people are shocked. Crap like this is textbook lib. If we were not so freaking hell bent on electing ‘lesser evils’ that sit back and LET DEMS BE DEMS WITH NO OPPOSITION, then things would be different.

So thank one of many freepers/supposed right wingers intent on voting for lesser evil RINOs NO MATTER WHAT. Thanks to them we have no one fighting this insanity. Yes, their fault since RINOs don’t elect themselves.

There. Fixed it. :)

How does the federal government control what my local school does or doesn’t do? My schools are paid for by my real estates taxes and lottery money from the state.

Can’t wait until Michelle - and her idiot husband - use up their fifteen minutes and “move” into the garbage can of history.

Soft drink ads on scoreboards are because Coke and/or Pepsi have usually donated the scoreboard.

When I was league president for youth baseball, Coke gave us 5 electronic scoreboards. Balls, strikes, outs, runs per inning for each team and total runs hits and errors were all worked from the pressbox.

If people didn't like that only Coke products were sold at the concession stand, they could bring their own liquid refreshment.

I think Tea party types should campaign on one issue. Repeal of -everything- put in place since this crew took office. A true one issue campaign.

They would get support. Lots of it.

Has anyone seen how overweight so many of the children are in Black Urban America as well as in many Latino schools???

Will these ‘rules’ apply to the ‘hood and Latin schools or will being overweight be labeled a ‘cultural’ thing to be celebrated??

Bears repeating.
