Greek port workers strike over privatization plans

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Greek dock workers across the country walked off the job Wednesday in a 24-hour strike to protest plans to sell a stake in the Piraeus Port Authority, the country's largest port.

Hundreds of striking port workers gathered in central Athens and marched to Parliament for a protest rally. Nearby, protesting farmers' market suppliers demonstrated outside the Finance Ministry against higher taxes. Both rallies ended peacefully.

I thought unemployment in Greece topped 30%. Sounds like a good opportunity to let some people who actually want to work get a job.

“Strikes” in other parts of the world can be a little different from the ones we’re used to here.

For example, in S.A. airport employees will announce a strike several weeks to a month in advance and give everyone plenty of notice to prepare. Then when the time comes the “strike” is essentially a short vacation for the employees who when the strike is scheduled to end come back to work. No protests or anything like that, no, just a week off attributed to the “strike.”

Very strange the first time I encountered it.
