'Slow-poke’ bill aims to stop left lane lingerers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | Aaron Gould Sheinin

Those who lollygag in the left lane of highways and interstates could be ticketed under legislation approved in the state House on Wednesday. House Bill 459, by Rep. Bill Hitchens, R-Rincon, was approved 162-9.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

If I am in the process of passing a line of slower vehicles, at more than 5MPH over the posted speed limit, do you expect me to speed up and make an unsafe lane change because you and your Beamer (it’s usually a Beamer) came screaming up on my bumper at 85? Good luck with that! I’ll pull back in when it is safe to do so, not before.

So what you are saying is that people who obey the rule of law while driving are evil people.

If you are hanging out in the left lane and not passing, and the law in the area is that slower traffic is to keep to the right, then you are not obeying the rule of law.

I don't like slow drives hogging the left lane either, but I doubt slow driving in general leads to more accidents than fast driving. In fact, if nobody could drive faster than 50 mph on the highways, undoubtedly the accident/fatality rate would go down.

I would actually like to see the speed limit on the interstates raised here in Wisconsin from 65 to 70 mph. But only because the average speed on I-90-94 is already around 70 with no increase in the accident rate from when drivers drove more slowly twenty or so years ago.

If they can make it so driving 90 mph would not lead to more accidents, that would be fine with me. But as it stands, the faster someone drives, the more likely they are to have a fatal accident than someone driving slower. No matter how irritating it is to drive at slower speeds, slower speeds mean less accidents and less fatal accidents.

Often it’s more like 2 mph, and yeah, you could move over. And if you can’t make a safe lane change, perhaps you should stick to smaller roads without so many lanes that are more your speed.

My line on that is slow in the left lane tickets, warning for a single brake light out, tickets for 2/3 or 3/3 out.

About damned time!!!!

The left-lane hogs cause SO many accidents because people always try to pass them on the right.

And, Grandma and Grandpa, I love you very much. But, if you are too scared to drive at highway speeds, you CERTAINLY don’t belong in the far left lane!

I’m still pondering the sublime implications of the remarkable proposition that someone driving the speed limit can be considered reckless.

See my post 149 for your answer.

(But for you I might make an exception. Nothing like gently flicking off the cruise control when a tailgaiter gets too close — and watching that speedometer needle slowly, almost imperceptibly creep down one sweet mile an hour at a time.)

Being conservative DOESN’T mean we want NO government. It means that we want government to respond to REAL concerns that affect the lives of more than a tiny minority of “special interests”.

If you want anarchy, FRiend, move to Somalia.

Maybe (yes) its weird around here. The Prius Drivers haul a$$ in southeastern Wisconsin, summer and winter.

Occasionally you’ll see one slowed down to merely the speed limit.

The problem, FRiend, is that you never know the cause of someone else’s speeding.

It could be a surgeon on the way to perform emergency surgery on your Grandmother, or a man rushing his child to the hospital.

My point is.... YOU just never know.

That’s easy, if road conditions are bad you should driver slower than the limit. But in this discussion the recklessness is in deliberately blocking another vehicle’s path. You don’t know if the guy coming up behind you is actually going to evade contact, sure if he’s fully aware and sane he’ll slow down to not hit you, but maybe he had a heart attack, maybe he fell asleep, maybe he picked up that hitchhiker at the last rest stop and is getting a BJ, maybe he watched Road Warrior one too many times. If you choose to stay in front of a guy that you already think is an idiot and a menace and an accident waiting to happen that’s pretty reckless.

I was wrong with my first comment to you. You aren’t an anarchist: you are a fool.

There is NO WAY that today’s society can be “left alone” to the extent that you espouse, or that frankly I prefer.

We have WAY too many people that would use the lack of government to wreck havoc on society, were your vision to come to pass.

So true Dude.

Another nanny state inspired micro manage everything in our lives. If somebody is bogarting the left lane just get on their bumper and start flashing lights and harrass the boop out of them til they move over. Or pass them on the inside. End of problem.

But no it has to be legislated now. Its a new law with a new fine. What a crock!!!! There should be a law agains’t everything.

All the nanny staters on FR raise you hand for making it agains’t the law to forget and leave your left hand blinker light on as you fly down the interstate. Lets make sure its a misdemeanor with a hefty fine.

Who gives a s#@t about somebody poking along in the left lane? Really? Get out of town!
