'Slow-poke’ bill aims to stop left lane lingerers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | Aaron Gould Sheinin

Those who lollygag in the left lane of highways and interstates could be ticketed under legislation approved in the state House on Wednesday. House Bill 459, by Rep. Bill Hitchens, R-Rincon, was approved 162-9.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

How about tickets for those who pass on the right going over the speed limit?

Perfectly legal in most states. (Some people confuse laws that prevent passing on the right SHOULDER with a prohibition on overtaking slower traffic in the left lane of a multi-lane highway).

Most people believe in government roads, and people hate, hate, HATE tolls, so your average private road WILL NEED to be subsidized.

That doesn't answer the question.

The question was irrelevant because if people drove with courtesy there would be no need to pass on the right or even a way to do so. Slow driving in the left is a major cause of the chaotic traffic patterns on the highways and thus accidents.

"I guess we all know where you drive..."

Not at all. slow pokes in the passing lane tick me off as much as anyone but no more than speeders, people who run lights, and a myriad of other traffic infractions. I don't think it should result in giving someone a criminal record and subjecting them to jail time.

Why are there speed limits and cops with radar guns?

TO raise money for the police state.

“Yep...should be against the law to drive slow in the left lane. When I was in France and Belgium I noticed the drivers always got into the right lane and never used the left lane for cruising and someone told me it was against the law there to cruise in the left hand lane. I believe that is largely responsible for the lower number of fatalities on the highways there.”

I obtained an international driver’s license in Germany, 1970. This practice for driving was one of the keys to the rhythm of the German roads and autobahns.

It is the rule in many parts of the US, but apparently little enforcement.

I think some drivers who camp in the fast lane believe they are fine if they go the speed limit.

But in California if you just go the speed limit on major highways, you are holding up traffic.

And unless it is widely followed, it gets worse not better.

Rather than camp on somebody’s tail to assert my right to the fast lane, I back off, go into the right, slower lane to pass, or not pass at all.

At that time I felt German drivers were more skilled at high speed, than American drivers.

And I’m certain the autobahn and other national highways in Europe were designed for higher speeds. Curves, banking etc.

If I'm driving the speed limit in the left lane, and you want to drive 15 MPH over the speed limit, you are welcome to drive around me.

I pass, get in front of the slowpoke and then slow down to 45 mph because that's legal too... used to do it to Priuses out in Marin County quite often. ;-)

Finally !

Yep, finally.

This problem is more serious than admitted, numerous privileged superior morons drive to block, and do it deliberately. They cannot stand anyone in front of them and block just to spite.

It's worst here in California.

you can make the same argument for free supermarkets as free roads:both are socialism, both create shortages. people might hate paying money for food or roads but that's life nothing is free and if you think socialism works you are brainwashed

people don't know that private roads would work. they've experience mostly gov toll roads with huge waits. in real capitalism you choose what road to take , what rules to follow and what level of traffic you want. time is money so if you could drive 100mph on practically no traffic(no accidents) then you'd make the toll for free on the time you save . people don't think and trust government . you think capitalism works as in the dollar tree, walmart , Amazon, smart phones, toyotas etc but won't work in roads, healthcare why? all are just products. plus we pay half our incomes in taxes to government . i think capitalism would do things cheaper and you come out ahead and you don't become slaves

I tend to drive limit +5. If someone closes on me I usually start making plans to yield the lane under the premise that it’s preferable to have them in front of me where I can keep an eye on them rather than behind me itching to get by.

The only time I stick to the lane is when they’re going really really fast because I’ve found that they’re already calculating how to thread the needle and if I make any changes they probably won’t be able to respond quickly enough.

If I keep my eyes roving instead of staring straight ahead I usually don’t have any surprises.

What if someone can’t move safely to the right because of tailgating, speeding, and passing on the right?

Whenever people complain about toll roads, I point out that you're paying to not have a lot of other people on the road. If you're traveling through a metropolitan area (e.g. Toronto), and there's a toll road alternative to the "freeway", it's generally worth paying the toll. When you consider the higher wear and tear, and lower gas mileage on the "free" highway, you save money by paying the toll. As a bonus, your trip takes less time, and is far less dangerous.

What if you are in the left lane, driving the speed limit, and some jerk comes along doing 10-15 MPH over the speed limit. Do you still have to pull over?

If you are doing the speed limit in the left-hand lane, YOU are the slow-poke!! ...if you were from Texas Cowboy Bob you would know that. ...the left-hand land is also referred to as the passing lane.

I see your that type all the time, I'm driving the speed limit, I pay my taxes, I'm not moving!!

I thought only in Colorado does the left lane drivers drive slower than the right lane. I bet foreigners get confused when it seems to be the rule to “pass on the right”.

Because these inconsiderate pinheads drive slow in the left lane we have to build wider freeways. They ought to be paying very large fines to cover those costs.

Legislation is a good start but there needs to be a special level in hell for people who drive slow in the fast lane.
