Ted Cruz Responds to Thomas Sowell: 'You Have Got to Pick Some Battles to Fight'
Breitbart ^ | Breitbart TV

Posted on 02/27/2014 5:42:15 AM PST by SoConPubbie

Earlier this week, conservative economist and Hoover Institution fellow Thomas Sowell made a very extraordinary statement about Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sean Hannity’s Fox News Channel show. Regarding Cruz’s calls to use the budget process to defund ObamaCare and taking a more aggressive posture in insisting upon government spending reductions before agreeing to raise the debt ceiling, Sowell had said if George Washington has insisted upon a Cruz-like strategy during the Revolutionary War, there wouldn’t be a United States today.

On Hannity’s Wednesday show, Cruz shot back at Sowell and said that you have to take on some of these fights on occasion.

“The great Thomas Sowell – I admire and respect,” Cruz said. “Listen, I have read his works all my life and he is a fantastic thinker. And I actually agree with just about everything he says except that unfortunately congressional leadership in the Senate, you have got to pick some battles to fight. I believe in picking your battles. I don't believe we need to fight on everything. I think we need to fight on issues that matter. There have been two significant battles that I think we really should have fought on that I tried to fight on as much as possible."

"They were number one, ObamaCare, the most disastrous law hurting millions across this country," he continued. "And number two, the debt ceiling, because we're bankrupting our kids and grandkids. And he said -- Mr. Sowell said you should fight on fights we can win. I agree and if Republicans had stood on the debt ceiling -- we had the votes to insist on meaningful spending reforms. And in fact, just a few years ago, Congress used the debt ceiling to get the Budget Control Act and we did that with "

If the battle is to be fought on this (and it very much needs to be fought), Cruz’s side has to have its act together...which it assuredly did not. As long as they didn’t have their act together, they were going to lose and be significantly discredited.

Your post reminds me of what has happened to me regarding Michael Medved. I see him as a limp wristed moderate now. It started with his early on shilling for Romney because he “could win”. And it actually was capped off yesterday when he said that even if these conservatives win the primaries, “what have we gained?” A HE** of a lot, Mr. Medved. And it is better than sending RINO’s back.

He doesn’t get that the democrat party is the party of Biff Tannon and the R’s are the party of George McFly. We need the new George to belt Biff when he is up to his bullying. And that means getting rid of people like McConnel and Bohner.

Yes, it is risky. Life is risky. What George Washington did on Christmas was risky. What Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain dit at Little Round Top at Gettysburg was risky. What Patton did in North Africa, and Doolittle did over Japan was risky.

These men in our branches of government are not even risking their lives, but only what John Adams called risking their “comfort”. We need statesmen like Cruz, Lee and, to a lesser degree, Paul to lead the charge against the milquetoasts we have, in a consumerism soaked stupor, elected for ourselves and become the country we once were: Full of personal responsibility and willing to sacrifice comfort for freedom, for ourselves and our progeny.

Or we can go the way of ancient Rome, wich is exactly the path we are currently travelling.

Having been a fan of Dr. Sowell over many years, I have to believe he was coming from a point of honest intellectual debate.

That being said, about the ONLY way the GOP has to put the brakes on King Barry’s Rule By Decree is to cut the funds and shut down the government.

Ted is right. Until they muster the cojones to do that, Project Transform America will proceed unmolested.

I’m not so sure. It is very common to lose a battle but win a war. Doolittle’s raid on Japan comes to mind. Its non-military successes were very real and changed the tone of the war yet to come.

As Cruz did with Obamacare, IMO. And the war (political) is yet to come regarding ZeroCare. It’s not really started yet. We are in preliminary skirmishes.

Rather, the battle lines are being drawn.

I’ve though that for the last 30 years (I am in my early forties).

Ted Cruz certainly didn’t take up the Arizona battle that is for sure.

*facepalm* How is this his battle to fight?

Obviously to me there was a coordinated effort at that time (and probably still exists) to put the evil eye on Cruz. Several op-ed pieces came out at that time and up to Ann Coulter’s latest.

I’m sure alot of favors were called in to get those negatives flowing.

Me too, and I just turned 60. What’s interesting is that the more I know about the fall of ancient Rome, the more I believe history is repeating itself. I didn’t know, at first, that the Huns took Rome because it had rotted from within. Our rotting was pretty much complete with the election of Obama. Just look at the youtube videos of his supporters - both folks like Nancy Pelosi as well as the rank and file “I won’t have to worry about my house payment” types.

And it is only getting worse. Much worse. The vultures gather.

I noticed this too. RINO Republicans are behind a concerted effort to belittle Cruz, more so than the Dems. I didn't catch it all, but Start Varney yesterday was saying now wasn't the time to fight and Neil Cavuto asked when was the time. Varney answered they had to win the elections. But if my only choices are Democrat or Democrat lite, why bother voting. If they think they will win elections by not putting up a fight, they are just wrong.

I'm just surprised that Sowell went along with this. He's being used by the RINOs on this one.

My concern is what kind of place will my children grow up in? There really isn’t any place else to go to.

The “make a stand now” crowd is walking right into an obvious trap. The media will not cover these fights fairly. The right will be made to look like evil demons and the low information voter will buy it. We know this will happen because that is exactly what happened last time when we lost senate seats we could have won. Yea let’s go right ahead and give the dems their talking points so they can keep the senate.

Better to lie low right now and let Obamacare continue to sink their chances. They are already attempting to manufacture a new issue “income inequality” and the minimum wage in an effort to take attention away from Obamacare. We need to do one thing and one thing only until after the next election and that is continue to hammer Obamacare and not allow the dems to change the subject.

The day before this site is shut down by the democratic fascists, the purists on this site will still be raging against the GOPe. Half of them will be trolls and half of them won’t know what hit them. Sowell has a much longer track record of being right than Ted Cruz.

Spoken like a GOP-E Purist, oh, and also a Democrat politician. They like to bandy the phrase around to slime those who stick to their principles as well.

If conservatives continue to acquiesce to the manipulation of the GOP-E and NOT demand that they honor their campaign promises, they will become a smaller and smaller minority and a Third party will present itself and totally decimate the GOP.

Your choice, die or succeed on your principles, or die cowering in the corner refusing to fight because you think it is to hard and too risky.

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldn’t make any sense at all." -- President Ronald Reagan

(I loved that movie!)

I hear you.

For years now, I have been enthusiastically supporting people who, at first, seem to have the right ideas and will stand for the Constitution and for the People.

Then they go to DC, get a little prominence and suddenly, without warning, turn on us. The most egregious case would be Justice Roberts. I remember how delighted we all were when he was the alternative to Harriet Miers. Somehow I wonder what her decision would have been regarding Obamacare. Perhaps because she is not as possessed of a such an intricate legal (and devious) mentality, she would have looked at what the Constitution actually SAYS. Who knows? Water under the Bridge.

Other disappointments: Scott Brown, Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, etc etc etc. (sigh)

I am so sick of betrayal, and Dr. Sowell was the final straw! I don’t trust anybody anymore.

Thank you for this thread.

_________________

In our soundbite news society, a catchy phrase, such as “Do Nothing RINOs,” often obscures the basic root causes that the soundbite summarily describes.

For example, this quote by Senator Cruz is worth examining as follows:

” - - - And he said — Mr. Sowell said you should fight on fights we can win. I agree and if Republicans had stood on the debt ceiling — we had the votes to insist on meaningful spending reforms. - - - “

* The author of the thread article claims that “Cruz shot back at Sowell.” which can be substantiated if the assumption is made that Cruz and Sowell have differing points of contention.

* If, however, one looks for similarities between the two men, then this part of the above quote “ - - - Mr. Sowell said you should fight on fights we can win. I agree - - - “ can be used to substantiate that Sowell and Cruz are in agreement about what fights should be fought.

* If the assumption is made that both Sowell and Cruz are afflicted with the same RINO terminal disease of fighting only the fights that can be won with no risk, then Cruz in no better than any other loser, obsolete RINO.

* If Senator Cruz does not place a higher value on fighting battles with overwhelming odds that favor the enemy, then his only choice is to cede the field of battle to the enemies of the US Constitution, as the Congressional RINOs have done for the last five years.

* A successful defense of ones position only requires one third the force of the attacking offense, according to Military Science. IOW, it takes less strength to defend than it takes to attack.

* Since the Congressional RINO strategy has been, for the last five years, to always stay on defense, then what evidence exists that the Congressional RINOs have inflicted ANY damage on the attacking enemies of the US Constitution?

* There is not even evidence of serious DISCUSSION of use of their primary weapons: House Special Inspectors and Impeachment!

* The field of battle is littered with the bloody, cowardly footprints of the “Rapidly Retreating RINOs” and echoes of them screaming in terror: “We can’t do anything because we do not have control of the Senate and White House!”

* If our sorry Congressional RINO should very soon choose to defend the US Constitution by fighting many defensive battles whose goals include decimation of the enemy by fighting a war of attrition, then we, the disgusted voters, would have our FIRST reason to vote for an incumbent Congressional RINO.

* Senator Cruz may yet prove that he understands the value of a continuous series of battles in a war of attrition, but RINO intellectual Thomas Sowell only understands the safe, cowardly value of continuous retreat.

* As for a lesson from History, Thomas Sowell has chosen to ignore the historical fact that General George Washington fought mainly battles that did harm to the British enemy.

* The Father of our Country successfully fought a War of Attrition.

* So far our sorry Congressional RINOs have proven themselves to be unworthy of following General Washington’s proven method of Victory.

It doesn't matter how bad ObamaCare is. It seems to have been designed to fail. They will just change it to a single payer system.

The trap is waiting and not doing something. This is what happened in Germany and Europe during WWII.

The Republicans did nothing to solve the illegal immigrant problem when they had a chance. Now we are overrun with illegals and the Republicans are leading the charge to grant Amnesty. The illegals are already being signed up in California for ObamaCare and once they are granted Amnesty, they will be given voting rights. I don't care if the Republicans say they will make sure there is a long waiting period before they will be granted rights to vote. This will never get past the courts. We can't have two types of citizens. Those that are allowed to vote and those that will not be allowed to vote.

Obama is destroying our military on purpose. Destroying our economy little by little. Increasing benefits to those who will not work (as opposed to those who really need the benefits). We have to fight now while we still have our rights.
