Obama launches ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ to help young minority men (barf alert)

President Obama will announce a $200 million commitment from nine foundations Thursday afternoon to bolster the lives of young men and boys of color. The funding is part of a larger initiative from the White House to bring private businesses, non-profits and local governments together to intervene in key moments in the lives of young black and Hispanic men to ensure they stay in school and eventually train for and get good jobs. As Yahoo News first reported, the cause will be a major focus of Obama’s—and the first lady’s—even after he leaves office. "I think it’s something that's deeply personal to the president and first lady,” said Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president and the Obamas’ closest friend from Chicago. “I’m sure their commitment to this initiative will be a lifelong commitment. This is not something they simply want to do while he’s in office — it will continue.” The president personally ordered his senior staff to come up with this new “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative in the wake of the shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin two years ago. Obama—who was criticized by civil rights leaders for avoiding race-based initiatives and conversations while in office—was deeply moved by Martin’s death, and tasked his staff with creating a holistic, research-based approach to helping young minority boys succeed and avoid violence.

No surprise here.I was an outside public utility tech and would have to train new techs on occasion. All too often I would literally have to tell the “trainee” to get out of the truck. So many showed no initiative asked no questions and eventually turned out to be crappy techs but were kept on the payroll for obvious reasons.

What will the *oversight* of funding be?

I have experienced two examples of what can and will happen when money is involved with good intentions. One recent event found that the Doc Hurley scholarship fund had been embezzled...drained of scholarship money intended to help inner-city kids go to college....by the daughter of the founder, Doc. Hurley.

Doc was a lovely gentleman who was a HS school coach. He devoted his life, and walked-the walk...returning to the city to serve as a beacon to underprivileged kids. He was loved and respected in the Hartford region and was able to amass donations for a longstanding scholarship fund.

He passed away a few weeks ago, at age 91, I'm sure he died of a broken heart, when he learned his own flesh-and-blood, took all the funds for her personal use.

A few decades ago, private contributions set up a scholarship program for ANY student who attended one particular elementary school, who was in need, and wanted to pursue an education beyond HS. That included a 4-year ride to Harvard, Yale, community college, culinary school...yada. The only codicil, was that they had to graduate from HS/ The children were tracked/followed over their years in the Hartford PS. Of the hundreds that were followed.....ONE child took advantage of the scholarship and went to hairdressing school. Fact.

Hussein's pronouncements are doomed to FAILure. I can see the writing on the wall.
