Supporters still press for Medal of Honor
Ten years after he died in a 2004 firefight in Iraq, Sgt. Rafael Peraltas death continues to ignite controversy, with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last week refusing to reopen his nomination for the Medal of Honor and the Marines family accusing a newspaper of race-baiting in its reporting on the standoff.
Peraltas mother Rosa said in a letter this week that a reporter for The Washington Post seemed intent on trying to get her to say her son was denied the Medal of Honor because he was Hispanic.
And some Marines who were on duty with Peralta on Nov. 15, 2004, the day he and a squad of marines were clearing houses in Fallujah, were stunned to see their comrades now say the story that Peralta scooped a grenade to himself, saving a number of Marines lives, was a concocted lie.
If youre trying to smear the legacy of a Marine whos a hero, who saved my life, then youre barking up the wrong tree, said Nicholas Jones, one of the Marines in the room when insurgents tossed the grenade toward the troops. Peralta received the Navy Cross for his actions, but his supporters including California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter, who himself served as a Marine office in Fallujah during the Iraq war say he deserves the Medal of Honor.
Mr. Hagels decision last week makes him the third defense secretary to reject awarding the Medal of Honor.

The media utterly disgusts in their mission to divide us. They stoop lower every day.
Difficult to believe this administration would deny Sgt. Peralta the MOH because he was of Hispanic ancestry...
When has anyone in the Obama administration not seized immediately on anything that would be self-serving?
All that aside, Sgt. Peralta is a hero of the highest order, deserving of the MOH and any other honors his nation can bestow...Eye witness fellow Marines who survived the grenade blast have testified Sgt. Peralta’s dying act was to shield them with his own mortally wounded body...The word of those Marines should be more than enough...Many have been awarded the MOH for less...
FUBO and CO will not be around forever, and hope lingers a future administration will do what is right for Sgt. Peralta, his family, and his memory...
Via con Dios and Semper Fidelis, Sgt. Peralta...
Rep. Hunter served as an “office?”
Rep. Hunter served as an office?
Yeah, I saw it too. I see a lot of errors like that in articles these days. Makes me wonder if people are writing this stuff on their i-devices and letting autocorrect and autocomplete do most of the work.
Many deserve the MOH
Many are called, but few are chosen..............
Indeed. Autocorrect, autocomplete, and/or speech-to-text. I see obvious errors every single day that would never have gotten past even the own reporter’s first glance in the old days.
Back in the ‘90’s Bill Clinton’s administration was handing out upgrades to the MoH like they were Green Stamps — mostly based on the need to redress perceived racial bias. Now, not so much...
The word of the Marines that were in the room is good enough for me.
