Ukrainian military has been gutted for years. Today it’s no match against Russia so it would make no sense to face them in the open field, only to be slaughtered.

So, (playing a general here, utilizing many wasted hours of playing computer games) given the unfavourable flat terrain and being badly outnumbered, the plan for the Ukrainian armed forces would be to pull back from the Russian frontier to Chernihiv-Poltava-Kirovohrad-Vinnitsia line. Dissolve parts of the army into the cities and try to make a stand there with some urban warfare; if they fall, pull back to Kyiv. As we speak, they have to be thinking of turning Kyiv into a fortress. Open up those partizan books and re-learn the guerrilla tactics (sabotage, bombings, assassinations etc)

The main Russian thrusts probably would be coming from Sumy, Kharkiv and Odesa, but just in case, put a few land mines and watch the Belarus border. River Dnipro could be a great barrier but I’m afraid they could just outflank it from the south.

So, it’s guerrilla and urban war to try to bleed the Russians out. Ukrainians need to secure supply lines from Poland or Romania because I’m expecting arms and medical supplies to come from there. Lastly, Ukrainian government would need to open up those army stockpiles and start arming the civilians asap.

Russia picked a perfect moment to attack Ukraine. The country is at its weakest, it’s split in two and in the worst case scenario, resources of only Western and Central Ukraine can be counted on. There won’t be foreign military help (except supplies, words of encouragement and maybe intel) so Ukrainians have themselves to rely on.

The Ukrainian government at present is going out of its way to keep things calm. This military option is in case everything else fails.

Would appreciate input from somebody in the military who actually knows what they’re talking about (unlike me)

Russia has no interest in occupying Ukraine - it would have to take over responsibility for housing, feeding, clothing and looking after a part of the population that hate their guts

So you missed that "ussr collapse greatest tragedy of the 20th century" from Putin? The man has a mission to restore the USSR, plain and simple. As for the populations that hates their guts, one needs to look no further than 1932. Russian history is full of genocides. An ELECTED Russian official (not some anonymous blogger on the internet) year or two ago announced a plan for Western Ukrainians - to resettle them in Siberia to help counter Chinese influence there.

Lastly, you're missing the cultural/historical significance that Ukraine has for Russia. Ukraine is where they believe their ancestors are from, the so-called "historical homeland", their Jerusalem.

Doing that would cost a lot of lives.

Russia can easily make short work of Ukraine in a war, no doubt.

But that’s not the problem. Its rebuilding Ukraine from ground zero. Someone is going to have to find the money for it.

And in this day and age both wars and empires are expensive.

. River Dnipro could be a great barrier but I’m afraid they could just outflank it from the south.

If I were the government and military in the Ukraine, I'd put my better forces west of the Dnipro and dig in for an extended guerrilla campaign while leaving enough forces on the eastern border with Russia to take the fight to them and make a stand.

This would serve to ensure the Russians wouldn't have an easy task of taking the whole country, and the mayhem on the eastern border would turn the world against the invading Russian army. It would put Russia in a real bind both materially and politically, while western Ukraine fights a war of attrition.

This scenario would heighten hostilities between the west and Russia and could eventually lead to something far worse than the Eastern Ukraine being annexed by Russia. Too bad those who saw this coming aren't now president of America instead of this enabler/traitor enjoying "happy hour" while the world burns.

DEBKA: Russians strike Ukraine army post in Crimea. Kiev fears Ukraine army putsch. US warships on standby

" Russian armored forces build up for Ukraine As Moscow’s master plan for Ukraine continued to unfold, Russian forces Saturday, March 1, staged their first attack on a Ukraine military installation in Crimea, while completing their takeover of the region and its severance from Ukraine. Interfax reported from a Ukrainian source that 20 soldiers had entered an anti-aircraft missile command post in western Crimea and that negotiations rather than a clash were under way."

....

"Along with US warnings to Moscow, a high alert was secretly declared Saturday by the US Mediterranean Sixth Fleet. Two US warships which had been deployed in the Black Sea to back up Russian security for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi - the USS Taylor Frigate and the USS Mount Whitney Blue Ridge-class command ship - have moved over to the western side of the Black Sea opposite Crimea and facing the Russian navy base of Sevastopol."

If it does, and if Russia does not back off - which it has clearly telegraphed it won't - futures may be looking at a limit down open on Sunday."

Which is probably the only "up" side to the deal. One way or the other, the market needs to correct. Of course, the folks who have been milking our cash by the barrel will complain loudly and try to make the market the focus.
