The Ukrainian military is loath to get involved in a civil war and Russians are fellow Slavs. If its a war, there has been so far no loss of life and no bloodshed. But things can quickly change without warning.

The Russians sure had no problem deliberately starving 7m rebellious Ukrainians to death during the Holodomor, in addition to conducting a dozen other large scale massacres of Ukrainians in the process of putting down Ukrainian insurrections. Ultimately, the Ukrainians have to decide what their response will be. We can't do their fighting for them. If their response is to fight the Russians to the last dead GI, the way many of our existing allies seem to think, then they should get used to being a Russian province.

The Parliament isn't unelected.

Reportedly, MPs are forced to vote as they are told. They are physically assaulted, and their families are held hostage. In the photo below the governor of Volyn region was nearly killed, then dragged to the local Maidan and chained to the post:

What kind of legitimacy can be expected from a lynch mob?

I wonder if there are any “Ukranians” on the ships that defected. Or are they all “Russian”?

>>The Russians and Eastern Ukranians remember the US from Serbia/Kosovo, and they remember the ethnic Russians in South Ossetia.

To be honest there weren’t too much ethnic-Russians in Ossetia.
Ossetians are simply Christians of Iranian origin living in this area for centuries. Russians historically maintained relations with them to use imaginary or real threats from local Muslims towards Ossetians to ride in and kick some Muslim butt.
This time it was a fellow Christian Georgians who behaved as nasty as usually Muslims does in Russian opinion and it made sense to play Ossetian card against them.
It hasn’t helped that Georgians has treated Ossetians as untermenschen.
It is exactly what made Georgian Iranians a Russian nationals. For persecuted non-citizens of a banana republic of Georgia, falsely advertised as a young democracy and vibrant economy by neo-cons, Russian citizenship offered by consular office in Tskhinvali was a bargain.
Even as Georgians has fixed their attitudes and offered some rights to Ossetians it couldn’t help much. Unlike for the rest of Georgians, crawling through a Russian border at night wasn’t a requirement to get a good job for them anymore. Not to mention they could travel to about the half of the world without visas with Russian passport.

The question is - who reported it? Note that the Russians came up with the blood libel that the CIA invented AIDS to kill black people. If you read the Russian media's English language forums, you'll notice that it's full of vituperation against the "fascist" West written by people whose first language is clearly not English. It's clear, from the way Russia hasn't removed Lenin's statues from public areas, that the Russian public remains infatuated with him. It's also clear, from jimbo's reposting of a Lenin statue being removed from a Ukrainian public space, that he views this as sacrilege of the highest order and ipso facto proof that the Ukrainians are Nazis. I understand the Russian view - Lenin occupies no pride of place in any Western public places. Ergo, we must all be fascists to slight this great Russian and world citizen.

My point is - I could show you a handcuffed guy and tell you he is Putin’s personal slave. Heck, the Palestinians will show you any number of body parts of dead children and tell you that the Israelis cooked them to bake matzohs. That photo showed a guy chained to a post, with a riot police shield and some generic guy in the background. Was he a protestor being held before processing? Was he a pro-Yanukovich official posing for the camera? Nobody knows. We’ll find out how the Ukrainian people really feel when elections are held in May 2014.

The continued Russian blood libels - that Americans are fascists, Nazis and so on tells me that the Russians are unreconstructed imperialists with an unlimited appetite for land grabs, unchanged from the Soviet and Tsarist eras. Do they really think Americans are fascists and Nazis? Who knows? Who cares? The point here is that the Russians are on the march.

It's a legit photo. A governor of a province is a known person. Here is his bio, with a photo. And here is the article, see for yourself. I will quote a little here:

Volyn governor beat hard on the eyes of 30,000 protesters

The official was seized by protesters during the storming of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs

Real violence perpetrated protesters Ukrainian Lutsk. Volyn region governor Alexander Bashkalenko tried to appease a mob, but no amount of persuasion had no effect. Politics was severely beaten and then handcuffed on the central square in the eyes 30 thousand people and doused with cold water. There is information that the protesters went to the house of the governor for his family.

Here's the full story from the BBC at this link. It appears that Ukrainian governors are appointed by the President rather than elected:

Also, the President appoints and dismisses the Heads of the Local State Administrations (i.e. governors) by nomination of the Cabinet of Ministers. The debate on whether the President could hypothetically reject the candidate for the governorship officially proposed by the Prime Minister, thus forcing the latter to come up with a different nomination, is yet to be resolved.
As Yanukovich's appointee, the governor may have had no popular support. Ukrainian governors are not members of parliament, and would have had no hand in the 75% vote turfing Yanukovich.

That certainly could be the case. Most US Presidents don't have popular support; but for some reason we don't torture them. My examples were offered to demonstrate widespread violence against opponents of Maidan. There are reports about beatings of MPs, seizing their voting cards and then voting with them. How true those reports are? Hard to say from here. But if true, who exactly voted with those stolen cards?

Here is another article. It says that one MP got a child kidnapped. Other MP's families are visited by "radicals." It's personal there now.

It’s time to fix our international tax mess and then end dual citizenship. Loyalty to America only.

Peter the Great adopted the flag as the flag of the Navy.

Any sailor with divided loyalties will probably keep it to himself.
