Ukraine Puts Military on Full Alert After Russian Intervention Threat But Kiev's New Politicians Don't Offer Immediate Countermoves to Moscow By Margaret Coker And Alexander Kolyandr Updated March 1, 2014 6:33 p.m. ET

KIEV—Ukraine ordered its military to full combat alert after Russia's threat of military intervention in the country, but Kiev's new politicians didn't offer immediate countermoves to Moscow, amid reluctance by its Western supporters to stand with it militarily.

Ukraine's Security Council huddled throughout Saturday evening, while civil unrest spread during the day through eastern Ukraine and as Russian troops cut the strategic Crimean Black Sea peninsula from the rest of Ukraine. And the city council in the economically strategic eastern Russian-speaking city of Donetsk called for a referendum over possibly separating from the country.

When the Security Council meeting in Kiev broke up after several hours, the country's top leaders offered a mix of brave words. Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said security units would beef up patrols around critical infrastructure across Ukraine, like nuclear reactors and ports. He said the military would be ready to defend its homeland. "I gave the order to reach full combat readiness, given the potential for aggression," Mr. Turchynov said in a statement.

Western diplomats familiar with Ukraine, however, expressed some doubt about Kiev's ability to mount an effective defense against heavily armed forces from neighboring Russia. Ukraine's military is largely manned by conscripts, and they have well-documented problems securing fuel and equipment, which would hinder their battle-readiness and effectiveness, two diplomats said. Russia is Ukraine's main supplier of energy.

If Ukrainians are not prepared to fight for their territorial integrity, they shouldn't expect foreigners to do so. That it's taken this long for them to put their forces on high alert says either that they're expecting somebody else to do the fighting, or they needed some kind of casus belli to sway undecided troops within the Ukrainian military towards siding with the Parliament against the Russians. Either way, this isn't good for their cause.

The greatest danger America faces is that Russia goes a yard to far and the Ukrainians pull the nuclear trigger.

If the Ukrainians had nukes, would Putin be pulling this stunt?

The ukraine has no nukes whatsoever. Russia resumed them by the treaty signed between clinton & russia. Russia is going to use that very treaty to fullfil its obligation to guarantee the ukraines territorial integrity. Funny how these democrat prepared treaties work out...

I doubt the Tatar’s have much interest in getting in a losing fight, should one come. Putin is good buddies with Ramzan Kadyrov who is the Head of the Chechen Republic. By what i have read Kadyrov seems to be engaging in dialogue with the fellow Muslim Tatars, to smooze them over. I would expect any “uniformed” Russian troops “officially” moving into the other provinces of Eastern Ukraine will have little resistance. It is more than likely that political operatives from Russia have been plowing the field and also that Russian Spetznaz are well placed to take over select sites and communications, if it becomes time. If I were Putin I would stay east of the Dniper river which bisects the country. I would guess many of the Ukraine conscripts and officers relate to Russian soldiers more as comrades. Too bad it isn’t springtime. Ukraine has golf courses that could have enticed Barry’s boots on the ground.....

I was being facetious (not sincere). More seriously, boss constituents have been establishing worldwide slavery for several decades. Politicians are their employees.

“In his statement Obama warned Putin that there would be ‘costs’. But what he meant was that Putin/Russia would have to buy gasoline, diesel fuel, bullets, food for his troops, etc. You don’t invade a country for free.”

I doubt he put that much thought into it...Friday night and all, with a fundraiser and happy hour to attend. He just read what some low information high dollar contributor wrote on his teleprompter.

A few years ago, I worked with a pickaxe all day, each day under a house, beside a Jamaican. We worked cheap (only kind of job in the area at the time). The resident (customer) decided to have a basement after the place was built. The small contractor was a volatile lunatic who acted like he’d never really worked a day in his life (very nervous and complaining dude). After a couple of days of digging, the Jamaican turned to me and said, “It’s slavery, mon! Slavery!” I couldn’t stop laughing.

;-)

If the US can back Jewish claims to Palestine (after it ceased to exist after 1700+ years) how are we going to tell other countries that their claims (substantially lesser time in historical past) are invalid??!! The world does not take our moralizing seriously because too many times the US is hypcritical. Example - Taiwan has the right to succeed from China but the Confederate States were crushed brutally. China does not allow the Christians to practice openly and freely, but a kid in US public schools can be suspended if he brings a Bible into the school. Worst we deal with Saudi Arabia as a close ally but they can kill Christians. George Washington understood the moral warp world outside of the US and warned us not to get into foreign entanglements. He was right. God gave us two ocean barriers, a large and rich land to build a prosperous and free society. Stay within it and we will come out ahead. Leave it and we will get bloodied and bankrupted.

In Cuba and Germany too. What is your point?

If oceans are barriers what do they bar. Not the ships that the original settlers sailed here on.

Oceans bar travel the way that red lights can stop cars.

Let's give them Brighton Beach while we're at it, then.
