Actor Matthew McConaughey surprised Oscar viewers with an impassioned acceptance speech for his best actor win Sunday night an address during which he thanked God and said that the blessings in his life have come from the Almighty and not from any human hand.
After thanking his fellow cast and crew, McConaughey, who won for his role as AIDS patient Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club, told the audience that he has three things he needs each day: something to look up to, something to look forward to and someone to chase.
It was his comments about who he looks up to, though, that captured the most attention.
First off, I want to thank God, because thats who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or of any other human hand, McConaughey said. He has shown me that its a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton who said, When youve got God youve got a friend and that friend is you.
He also thanked his mother, wife and family. Watch the acceptance speech below (at link).

Loved it! A whole 2 to 3 clappers in the audience!
Best news of the night was that the audience was increased over the past years. I am so glad for that. Some of the best movies in years.
The academy homosexuals who voted for him because that role had to do with AIDS drugs were smiling as he approached the stage, and then probably started seething when they heard him mention God.
I actually think he is a pretty good actor.
While he has taken roles in movies that I’m not a fan of, his performance in HBO’s “True Detective” is extraordinary.
I wouldn’t say McConaughey is a conservative by any stretch, but he doesn’t come across as a guy who just mindlessly spouts the typical liberal garbage that the vast majority of Hollywood celebrities do.
Love it. Didn’t watch the Oscars, but I enjoyed and appreciate this clip of McConaughey praising his/our heavenly Father.
good speech. he made his case well.
He said, “if you have God, you have a friend. That friend is you.”
Now before anyone jumps on me about this. Let it be known that one of the characteristics of being Godless —is that you become your own worst enemy. Your best parts work against you.
I think they were shocked.
Actually your being too nice, it was more like 1 clap..just mentioning God Im surprised the audience didn’t boo, but I guess it wasn’t a DNC Convention so no boo’s allowed?
true... he was good in A Time to Kill, and i thought he was good in Dallas Buyers Club... i do not think his acceptance speech will hurt him in Hollywood... if anything, he will simply be cursed by winning the Oscar... it happens to so many!
Maybe he's one of those who actually has a life, and don't need to be invited to the "best" parties every weekend.
I’m glad he didn’t get political. And he will get roles. Because he always puts “butts in the seats”.
This guy’s running for something.
There was a lack of politics, by hwood standards and they were subdued. A lot of them mention love an family
There was no danger of seeing mooch this year. Tgey know. They have to know
It was really a surprise. But, if Romney had won we would have heard it all night long. There are lots of things they could have bitched about but not when their man is in office.
I’ve read he’s a republican. But we don’t now because he keeps it to himself. I wish they all would follow his lead.
