Crisis in Ukraine: As Russia surges, is US still a 'superpower'?

As the fast-moving crisis in Ukraine shows no sign of winding down, the United States – frequently dubbed the lone remaining “superpower” since the Soviet Union fragmented and fell – finds its place in the world questioned and perhaps tenuous.

More immediately, does the Obama administration have any effective options to influence behavior in Ukraine as Russian military forces surge there, taking over its Crimea region, and amounting to what interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk calls "a declaration of war”?

As hundreds of armed men in trucks and armored vehicles surrounded a Ukrainian military base in Crimea Sunday, Prime Minister Yatsenyuk said, "We are on the brink of disaster.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry was the point man for the Obama administration as he made the rounds of the Sunday morning television news programs.

Lt. Col. Ralph Peters just uttered the Quote of the Week on FNC:

“Vladimir Putin is a trained KGB operative. He sizes up people quickly. Putin has Obama’s number, and Obama’s number is ZERO”.

Nope. I don’t think we understand the nature of man. He is a predator. He is not a woman. He will kill you and go sleep well. We have a woman government. It is impotent. It is a joke.

No he isn't. We are this country and we are still here and ready to take up arms.

Obama is an interregnum...a constipational problem on the way to our next leader.

Not exactly, IMHO. What has happened is that the gaggle of superannuated campus leftists that has driven U.S. foreign policy for the last five years has finally realized that “punishing” the U.S. by reducing the world diplomatic model to that of 1913 has had some unexpected (by them) results: the world has not devolved into a butterflies-and-unicorns peace paradise but has, instead, screwed up its face at the stench of the next aggressive power. They’re scrambling now to blame somebody else, which is the last resort of a failed demagogue before the roof falls in.

The Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons based on a treaty obligation by the U.S. and EU to protect its sovereignty.

Nevillebama is working on Munich II right now.

I believe the current goals of the US are as follows:

1) Fight one major war
2) Discourage aggression in another part of the world.
3) Protect the US

Well, we are retreating in Afghanistan and we won't leave troops there. That war is over. We lost the war with the cave dwellers.
We have failed to discourage Russia's invasion of Ukraine -- a country with which we have a treaty stating that we will protect their sovereignty. Putin knows we will do nothing, so he charged right in.
Protecting our homeland? Maybe -- MAYBE -- Obama can handle that one. But our local militia could handle that one -- so long as Obama doesn't disarm the militia.

As it stands, our entire military strategy is a complete shambles.

Yes were still a super power but things have changed.

Our big industry is now lawn care, we’re now populated by Mexicans and assorted 3rd world foreigners, our new national past time is trying not to offend homos and those offended by our flag.

We are still as much a superpower, as a sword is sharp edge

However, if one is unwilling to weird such power or cut with the blade you carry, you are at once impotent and not a threat to any aggressors

Obama is a little queen. His entire constitution is based on indifference...on narcissism.

He will crumble when Putin challenges him.

But Putin knows full-well that Obama is not America. Obama is only the affirmative action part of America...and that part is irrelevant.

America is a core without leaders...which means that our system of selecting our leaders is broken.

Our leaders are still here...just not in plain sight.

Putin knows this. He will not attack us.

If he did attack, all hell would break loose.

Putin knows this.

No. Not as long as a buffoon is a head of state, the once great state...can’t think of the name now.

Obama’s greatest military achievement is the promotion of sodomy. No doubt this is the foreign perspective.

We need people to tell it like it is. There’s no time for less.

Thank you Lt. Col. Peters for your service. You’re a true American.

The history books offer no example of a superpower being ruled by a “community organizer(TM)”.
