Teen Sues Parents for Cash, College Tuition. Does She Have a Case? (18 yrs old)

A New Jersey teenager claiming that her mother and father tossed her out of their home and cut her off financially is suing them for immediate support, current private-school fees and future college tuition. The parents, meanwhile, say that daughter Rachel Canning, 18, moved out voluntarily after refusing to abide by their rules.

“We love our child and miss her. This is terrible. It’s killing me and my wife,” Rachel's father, Sean Canning, a town administrator and retired police officer, tells the Daily Record. “We have a child we want home. We’re not Draconian and now we’re getting hauled into court. She’s demanding that we pay her bills but she doesn’t want to live at home, and she’s saying, ‘I don’t want to live under your rules.’” The rules, he notes, include reconsidering her relationship with a boyfriend who may be a bad influence, being respectful, and abiding by her curfew. He and his wife, Elizabeth, who live in suburban Lincoln Park, about 25 miles outside of New York City, have kept their daughter’s car because they paid for it, says Canning, and he admits that they did stop paying Rachel's tuition at the private Morris Catholic High School. A hearing is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in the Morris County Superior Court.

She would look much better wearing an apron at the local butcher shop and earning her keep. An 18 y/o child must follow family rules if she wants to live at home. An 18 y/o adult is responsible for her own support but can make her own decisions. The parents have permitted her to choose adult life (not that they could stop an adult), and I hope she learns from her choices.

... Morris Catholic president Michael St. Pierre ... told the school called New Jersey Child Protection and Permanency last fall after abuse allegations from Rachel and what he called ‘difficult meetings between Rachel and her father, Sean Canning.’ To date Sean Canning admits a state worker visited the home just prior to Rachel’s alleged ‘abandonment,’ but that the official found the teen simply to be ‘spoiled’ and didn’t pursue the abuse allegations..."

some school to choose sides against the parents, Huh

Maybe they have pissed off enough of the people to wake their butts up to finally STOP being the ‘silent majority’...

It’s what we need... but about 2 decades late :/

I read elsewhere that she is an honor student. If so she can probably get a full ride somewhere, and work part time for spending money and birth control.

I went to work in a factory and supported us.

Thanks to out insane "Free Trade" policies, most factories have beem outsourced to China and elsewhare. Today you wouldn't have that option.

Tell me about it, my youngest works in a steel cabinet maker factory, as spot welder, makes about $9 an hr. Good thing he is single. While I’d like to see him married he’s 32, and have a grand baby, no way a couple could make it on that kind of money. Lucky to have a job at all. We still don’t know what impact 0’care if going to have on his job. He pays rent, food, utilities, and cell phone, does not leave much left over.
