New Jersey honor student sues parents for school fees after they cut her off at age 18
New York Daily News ^ | 03/03/2014 | BY SASHA GOLDSTEIN

An 18-year-old New Jersey honor student and cheerleader has been tossed from her parents’ Lincoln Park home, but demands that her mother and father continue to pay her private high school and impending college costs — as well as her mounting lawyer fees, according to her lawsuit.

Rachel Canning claims she’s been out of her parents’ home since her 18th birthday, Nov. 1, after her parents vowed to cut her off “from all support both financially and emotionally.”

But Sean and Elizabeth Canning say their “spoiled” college-bound daughter doesn’t live by their house rules and left the home because she didn’t like the law of the land — overseen by her father, a former Lincoln Park police chief.

The Morris Catholic High School senior and lacrosse player instead has lived at the Rockaway, N.J., home of a classmate, whose father, John Inglesino, has foot the bill for the suit.

“My parents have rationalized their actions by blaming me for not following their rules,” Rachel said in her court papers, according to The Daily Record of Morristown, N.J. “They stopped paying my high school tuition to punish the school and me and have redirected my college fund, indicating their refusal to afford me an education as a punishment.”

Canning filed suit last week and is scheduled to appear with her attorney, Tanya Helfand, at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Morristown Family Court. The teen will demand her parents pay a Morris Catholic tuition bill of $5,306 as well as $12,597 in accrued legal fees.

Needs to join one of those sugar daddy web sites, and relieve her father of the duty.

When I lived in Michigan in the pre-cell phone era, a well-to-do local school district removed all of the pay phones form their high school to stop all the spoiled chillin’ from calling their punk attorneys with complaints during recess.

Google is forever.......This will not look good when potential employers do a background check.

"Parents should rewrite their will while they are at it..."

leave her a dollar, so she can't claim of being locked out, leave the rest to charity.....and to protect themselves from 'estate-driven accidents', mail her a copy - return receipt. that way she knows she has nothing to gain by the demise of her folks.

Sorry for the cynicism.

I can see where they may be bound to pay for high school, since they likely signed a contract with the school at registration. If there is college fund money in her name, she may have the legal right to that, as well. Lots of details missing before everybody knee-jerk reacts to the headline.

One positive aspect of this absurd case is that even if the ridiculous outcome happens and Rachel Canning wins her case, her reputation is already out there for anyone with internet access. Would any professor want her in his/her class, knowing that if she doesn't get her way, she may sue? How about a future employer? Would any sane employer want to hire this spoiled brat? Call it reaping what you sow. Call it karma. Regardless, she really can't win in the end.

Rachel may be an ‘honor’ student, but it doesn’t look like she’s learned much.

She learned the only get rich quick scheme that works in America: The Lawsuit.

“... sorry for the cynicism”.

Oh, thank goodness someone else wrote that! I was thinking the same thing! Are we both cynics, HTB.. or do we just think alike?

The story has a photo of her in a clingy, lacy little black dress.

Yes, I’d say she’s likely had a few turns at bat above the “A” ball level.

If the court doesn’t toss this, then there is no hope for our nation.

My wife things because she is still in High School, they will continue to treat her as if she is under 18. And with this permissive lawless generation they will side with her.

The advise I would give the parents, is to try to reach a settlement outside the court. I would agree to pay for her private education through high school and to send her birthday cards on her birthday. She doesn't deserve it, but this is what I would do.

She will probably demand money to pay for her legal fees, but I would not agree to that saying those are the consequences of leaving home.

She will probably take this to court being an obviously prideful young woman. The court will allow the parents to pay the schooling just has the parent had attended (and to satisfy liberal justice) and then be done with her.

If she takes it to court, the she will get what her just deserts and leanness to her soul. Leave her in the devils hand in the hopes she will repent to the Lord whom she is offending here, and come to her right mind as the prodigal did - and find Salvation and forgiveness in Christ.

For without that, there is no hope for her.

I thought the same thing. Its based on a gut feeling from observing life for many years. No bias involved.
