Russian President Vladimir Putin has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize - but the conflict in Ukraine is also likely to be on the Nobel committee's agenda.
A record 278 candidates, including 47 organisations, received nominations for the 2014 prize, said the Norwegian Nobel Institute's director, Geir Lundestad.
Committee members who met on Tuesday added their own proposals with a focus on recent turmoil around the globe, Reuters reported.
"Part of the purpose of the committee's first meeting is to take into account recent events, and committee members try to anticipate what could be the potential developments in political hotspots," Mr Lundestad said.
Russia seized control of Ukraine's Crimea region after President Viktor Yanukovich was ousted on 22 February, prompting the most serious confrontation between Moscow and the West since the end of the Cold War.
Other nominees
Pope Francis and former American National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden also received nominations as well as Putin.
Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' right to education, is also thought to be among the candidates, as are several Russian dissidents who have spoken out for human rights.
Conflicts between protesters and the governments of Thailand and Venezuela are also expected to be debated by the committee.
"We are getting an increasing number of nominations from people in countries that have never submitted nominations before," Mr Lundestad said.
Although nominations are kept secret for 50 years, thousands of people around the world are eligible to propose candidates, including any member of any national assembly, and many make their picks public.
The committee narrowed its list to between 25 and 40 on Tuesday and it will cut its list to about a dozen by the end of April.
First awarded in 1901, the prize includes 8 million Swedish crowns in cash. The winner will be announced on the second Friday of October and the prize will be presented on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
The Nobel Prize is this big a joke
If Putin started a war in Ukraine, it would be a bigger accomplishment than what Obama did to get his Noble Peace Prize, so sure, Putin deserves a Noble Peace Prize.
Give Putin one. It officially became a joke when Obama got one based off a couple campaign speeches.
If Obama can get it, anybody can get it. Meaningless.
Putin has taken over Crimea & still has troops there.... Yet MSNBC says... “it’s been a bad day for Putin anyway you look at it”..lololol...
If Putin gets out of Ukraine, he is a shoo-in for the Nobel Peace Prize. Create the problem, solve it, and reap the rewards,
Limbaugh:
“Obama would go after Putin if he believed he was a Tea Partier”
Putin is every bit as deserving as Obama was. I take it this is for the Peace prize?
Aw hell, why not? , peace ain’t the issue. LOL
The Piece prize.
As Janis Joplin sang...
“Go on, take another little piece of Ukraine now Putin.
Whoa whoa, you know you got it if it makes you feel good!”
Not that Putin is Hitler, but Hitler was also nominated for the Nobel Prize (as was Stalin — and of course, Obama).
Don’t know if Putin has killed enough people yet to put him in 0bama’s league, but I’m sure he’s working on it.
Putin says, "If this is a bad day for me, wait until they see what a good day for me is"
Almost the same thing he did in Syria.
Hahahahaha, thanks, I needed the laugh!
Now the news is in the mode of propaganda pieces and hits...and of course it's a war of words between leaders...especially between This Administration and Putin.
Reporters get their pants in a knot every time they see troops movements in Crimea, not remembering there's also “Normal” military traffic with Russian ports there etc.....so they don't know the difference.
Putin's on top no matter how they are framing it currently...he has Crimea...and enough leverage to keep EU from doing more than talk a talk..and they aren't going to disrupt the flow of revenue from Russia into their banks.
China's standing with Putin...US has lost it's credibility so all Kerry does is shake Ukraine's hands and attempt to teach Putin foreign relations etiquette LOL....
I don’t know if the U.S. lost all credibility. I think most of the world can see that all of these idiots will be replaced. I don’t think the world has any confidence in the U.S. to replace them with competent diplomats. John Kerry has no credibility, which complicates everything. Much less than Hillary Clinton.
