SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A 66-year-old inmate has died while awaiting execution at San Quentin State Prison for a 1988 murder in Sacramento County.

The state corrections department said Ralph Michael Yeoman was found unresponsive in his cell early Tuesday. The cause of death is awaiting an autopsy.

He was sentenced to death in 1990 for the Feb. 13, 1988, first-degree murder, kidnap and robbery of 73-year-old Doris Horrell of Citrus Heights. Her body was found in a field west of Interstate 5 near what is now Sleep Train Arena.

That’s the method of choice for California’s death row population.

Meanwhile the citizens of the state pay exorbitant fees year after year so they can throw urine and feces at prison staff.

Take a life, pay with YOUR life. What is so hard to understand about that?

Yes, some exceptions - accidents happen - but when convicted of First Degree murder or Intentional Homicide? No mercy.

yes, it is absolutely disgusting... but believe it or not, there have been longer waits between conviction and execution in other states...

California isn’t the only place where death row inmates get practically endless appeals. I think that Tennessee has only executed 3 murderers since the death penalty was reinstated in the 70s.

I believe it. We have something like 650 to 700 people on death row out here.

At $50k per year, that’s a pretty healthy tab to pick up, simply because our state officials won’t implement state law.

Actually, that DOES happen more than enough times, but is extremely rare on death row. All the time I spent on death row at San Quentin, I do not remember it ever happening. The reason is, the chumps on death row, all have appeals going, and they do not want to jeopardize those appeals. Now, after all their appeals are finished, then they need to be watched with both eyes. Inmates dying while on death row, is something that happens with a certain amount of regularity.

Thanks Mark. I have read of it, but I don’t have first hand knowledge of it. If you do, I accept your version. I appreciate the comments.

You are correct sir. They pardoned me on Sept 14, 2013, after more than 25 years :-)

I was at San Quentin from 80 to 90, then at Solano (Vacaville) from 1990 to 2013. We called it getting gassed. It never happened to me, but I came close to getting it a few times. I did have a partner, that got gassed in the eyes, nose, and mouth in early 2013. It was not good. I wore face protection after that incident. Not all did, but I figured no one could protect me better than me.
