Russia may be tightening its grip on Crimea, with little resistance to date, but they have yet to face the Crimean Tatar factor.

There are 266,000 Crimean Tatars in Crimea, over 13% of the local population. They are Sunni Muslim, traditionally pro-Ukrainian, and much better organised than the local Ukrainians, who make up 23% of the population.

If there is a Tartar rebellion I think Putin will handle the Tartar problem in a 19th century fashion. He will likely remove the entire Tartar population by force and either work them to death in camps or ship them off to a new “homeland.” I think the Russians are done with half measures. Yeah, Putin is a lot like Milosvic was in his moves and actions. He too was a communist opportunist when that worked for him to get ahead. Then, he became an ultra-nationalist. The fact that the Tartars were brutalized by Stalin, like the Ukrainians who were purposely starved in the millions (Stalin stole their grain to build his utopia), makes them good candidates for Putin's mistreatment. And he'll know that there will be people who accept that he's championing Christianity when he does it because the Tartars were historically Muslim. You're definitely onto something.
