President Obama has signed an executive order today imposing sanctions on individuals he said violate Ukrainian sovereignty or are "stealing the assets" of the Ukrainian people.

He said the sanctions were meant to "impose a cost" on Russia's action in Crimea.

Obama emphasized that new visa restrictions the U.S. placed on those who are opposing the Ukraine government “continue our efforts to impose a cost on Russia and those responsible for the situation in Crimea.”

Obama hits Russia with sanctions; Boehner offers firm support

EXCERPT

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) backed Obama’s announcement and pledged to work with the administration to help it “keep President Putin in check.”

“I support the limited sanctions outlined by the president today to freeze some assets and block U.S. visas,” Boehner said. “This is a welcome first step, and we remain committed to working with the administration to give President Obama as many tools as needed to keep President Putin in check and prevent Russia from infringing on the sovereignty of any of its neighbors.”

Boehner said Putin is “counting on the United States to sit back and watch him do and take whatever he wants.”

The Speaker has criticized Obama’s handling of policy toward Russia, but Thursday he sought to show a unified front.

The House is expected to pass legislation later Thursday giving loan guarantees to Ukraine, and Boehner said work is continuing on a measure to allow the administration to place more sanctions on Russia.

Boehner did once again issue a call for the Obama administration to relax what he called “a de facto export ban” on natural gas that he said would weaken Putin’s influence in the region.

“There is growing consensus that ending this defacto export ban would not only keep Putin in check but help our economy as well and help our allies in Europe,” he said.

maybe we can impose sanctions on individuals stealling assets of the American people but then we would have to jail 30% of american ciotizens, all the illegal criminals, and most of DC.

It’s a sad sad day if the GOP lets the President ‘criminalize’ through executive order. It’s unseemly, though I care little for the Ukraine situation and rather the U.S focus on Latin American instead of Eastern Europe.

At the rate the Western World is importing culturally intransigent Muslims, the only caucasian that will survive will probably be the Russians.
