Mummified Body Found Inside Vehicle Parked In Garage At Foreclosed Home (Michigan)
CBS Detroit ^ | 3-6-14 | unattributed

Police say a body found inside a vehicle at a foreclosed home in metro Detroit might have been rotting there for several years.

A woman’s body “in a mummified state” was discovered in the back seat of a Jeep Liberty, parked in the attached garage of a home in the 1600 block of Savanna, near Walton Boulevard and Silver Lake Road in Pontiac, according to police.

A contractor made the discovery just after 6 p.m. Wednesday while working at the home, which is going through foreclosure.

Police said the license plate on the woman’s vehicle expired in 2008, which could very well be the last time she was seen alive.

“...local reports are that she was in her late 40’s and an employee of an auto company...”

And they never missed her from work?

Six winters and no frozen pipes or other plumbing issues? No failures in the heating system? No curious neighbors? Went through the foreclosure process and no one tried to contact the owner? A lot of things had to keep chugging right along without interruption.

From google earth it looks like a nice single family home that was fairly new (no mature trees in the development).

Yeah I don’t know why they call it metro Detroit. Its northwest of Pontiac in what looks to be a middle to upper middle class neighborhood.

But why didn’t any one from work report her missing?

***
Yeah, good question.

Maybe she had gotten sacked the day she decided to end it all.

So very sad that there was nobody who even knew she was missing.

There was a story posted on FR about 2 years ago, I suppose. Some contractor went to a house to do work on it for the new owner and found what was believed to be the remains of the former owner in a closet. Can’t remember the details, but I think that there was nothing left but the woman’s skeleton and her cane. I would think that the new owner was not living in the house. Perhaps he did not intend to and was just going to flip it.

That story haunted me for a while, and I tried a search about a year later to see if any more information had been published about it. So sad.

It can be done. It's just a lot less reliable than it used to be. As I said.

Until the invention of catalytic converters, suicide has been committed by inhaling the exhaust fumes of a running car engine, particularly in an enclosed space such as a garage.[134][135] Before 1975, motor car exhaust contained 4–10% carbon monoxide, but newer cars have catalytic converters that eliminate over 99% of the carbon monoxide produced.[136] However, even cars with catalytic converters can produce substantial amounts of carbon monoxide if an idling car is left in an enclosed space such as a closed garage.[137] As carbon monoxide poisoning via car exhaust has become less of a suicide option, there has been an increase in new methods of carbon monoxide poisoning such as burning charcoal,[138] or fossil fuels, or by combining formic acid and sulfuric acid, within a confined space.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_monoxide_poisoning#Suicide

OTOH, it's remarkably easy to kill yourself accidentally with CO. Studies showed that a two-car garage, both large doors and a window on the other side open, with reach IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) concentrations in about 10 minutes. This if from operation of a 5 hp compressor.

When they say "well-ventilated," they mean well-ventilated.
