Woman's auto-payments hid her death for six years
CNN ^ | 3/7/2014 | CNN

For years, the payments went out of the woman's bank account.

Nobody batted an eyelid. Bills were paid. And life went on as normal in the quiet neighborhood of Pontiac, Michigan.

Neighbors didn't notice anything unusual. The woman traveled a lot, they said, and kept to herself. One of them mowed her grass to keep things looking tidy.

At some point, her bank account ran dry. The bills stopped being paid.

After its warnings went unanswered, the bank holding the mortgage foreclosed on the house, a common occurrence in a region hit hard by economic woes.

Still, nobody noticed what had happened inside the house. Nobody wondered out loud what had become of the owner.

Our next door neighbor is single, in her 50s, and has MS. I take turns with the people who live on the other side of her and across the street cutting her grass and shoveling snow from the driveway. And while we talk when she’s outside, during the Polar Votex, or when the heat index is 105 in July, we don’t see much of her. You don’t see much of anyone in the neighborhood then. I’m not concerned since she has family that stops by often. But I’ve never been in her house, and as she ages and the MS progresses, we see less of her. It’s so gradual, you don’t notice.

Pontiac is NOT an upper class suburb. It is a dump like Detroit only smaller. Run by Dems for just as long.

And Carbon Monoxide victims usually just gently ‘fall asleep’, don’t they

Unless they have a rescued German Shepherd Dog who drags them out of bed! (reference to recent case)

In Michigan it can be longer then that. My parents were overseas for two years at a time and the post office held their mail. It helped that they got very little.

The woman's mummified body was sitting in the backseat of her car, parked in the garage. The key was halfway in the ignition.

Has anyone talked to her chauffeur???

"Life after death, I suppose."

And as a registered democrat she voted faithfully the democrat ticket.

Hey, my preffered end will have me found shrivelled up in an old mine somewhere out in the desert a century plus from now with a pile of treasure and my M1A and 1858 Remingtons on me...

Note to future finder - KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! :-)

"A bank account on “auto-payment”? Isn’t that kind of dangerous?"

--------------------------------->

Mr. h and I have used auto-payment for all of our utilities for years without a problem. We don't have a mortgage or car payments.

"Auto-payments" have worked for us but "your mileage may vary!"

Of course, we also have LIFELOCK!

I have to say that this could happen if my wife and I died. Our retirement funds are deposited directly into the bank and the bills are paid automatically. We never have visitors. We have no contacts with anyone except a few relatives by email. If we stopped emails they’d probably just think we’re pissed about something. I know my neighbors but I doubt they’d knock on the door if they hadn’t seen us for a while. Time has a way of getting away from you.

Some people elect to have their bills paid every month. Its a convenience feature.

But no one at the bank thought to inquire into this woman’s whereabouts?

My Dear Watson, as the renowned Sherlock Holmes would no doubt declaim, the game’s afoot. Her absence should have been as significant a clue as the dog that didn’t bark.

Hmmm.

Seriously? You must live in a small town. My bank doesn't know me from Adam, and wouldn't know/care if I'm alive, dead or in a Turkish prison dry humping Medea Benjamin.

Could be carbon monoxide poisoning. It can happen if the car is improperly maintained. Its known as the “silent killer.” But its odd no one noticed for six years and never bothered to check the garage.

People die all the time in this country especially with no one to look after them, without a second thought if they have no relatives. I’m not surprised one thought about the obvious all that time.

How did you know?

I live in a small town and I prefer my neighbors to look after me.

I will never live in the city again.

They don’t need to go to all that trouble, they know she voted and correctly for dems.

I’ve been in my house for four years. I have never once seen the neighbor behind me. I think the home is occupied, but not sure.

But, I also may go weeks without going into my backyard.
