'Windy' Davis Loses Half of Border Counties to Pro-Life Democrat

Texas Democratic gubernatorial hopeful 'Windy' Davis woke to some unsettling numbers along the Texas/Mexico border today. Of the 14 counties along the Rio Grande, Davis lost seven—including heavily Hispanic Webb and Hidalgo Counties. Davis Challenger Reynaldo “Ray” Madrigal’s prediction may have come true to an extent—Wendy has a pro-life Catholic problem and may not hold the support of motivated Latino voters by default. Based on unofficial vote tallies by county, Davis lost to Madrigal by substantial gaps in Webb, Zapata, Starr and Hidalgo Counties while managing to fall flat in three lesser populated jurisdictions along the western portion of the border.

Madrigal argued in February, “The majority of Texans are tired of Republicans being in office for 16 years and they don’t see 'Windy' Davis as a leader, especially Catholics,” to a Lubbock newspaper. “But it’s just not Catholics, it is Baptists and people of other religions. They don’t support abortion, and 'Windy' Davis is an abortion candidate.”

According to campaign finance filings with the Texas Ethics Commission, Madrigal claimed $0 in contributions or expenditures in January 2014. In January and February, Davis spent over $26,000.

Texas’ new voter ID law did not appear to be a problem in southern border counties as well. Webb County Elections Administrator Oscar Villarreal touted his 95% Hispanic electorate’s increased voter turnout compared to 2010. Webb, a county with a 30.6 poverty rate, demonstrates a potential hole in the Holder Justice Department’s case that Texas’ voter ID law harms economically vulnerable voters.

We conservative Texans prefer the Gov. not be a lieberal female dog from Rhodent Island.

If 8-10 points is close, than you’re right. ‘cause that will be the win margin!

Sad as this may be...but look for George P. to follow uncle George W.’s path to a more prominent political presence, first in Texas then on to DC.

The GOP should be moving in a sales team to speak to Hispanic groups in those areas to reinforce this new awareness of the gap between the democrats and Hispanics, now is the time to go on a mass communication effort in those areas.

He rode the name in for sure, but he won. Yes, your probably right, he’ll hold this office and then work toward something else.

I stink it up as much as I can. I don’t underestimate the lows nor the evil of democrats. If it causes people to work a little harder so they can say I told you so, then I’ll catch that arrow, doesn’t bother me in the least.

An oxymoron.

Altogether, 8 counties in Texas recorded no Republican votes in the primary.

But 21 counties recorded zero Democrat votes.

That's not to say that there are no Republican voters or Democrat voters in these counties. Instead, it means that there is no party machinery in these counties -- nobody to conduct the primary elections, staff the precincts, etc.

There were votes for the other party in the zero vote counties of one party
or at least in the ones I checked.

In all of them, in fact. Some counties held Democrat primaries only, some counties held Republican primaries only.

They are still trying to get the Statutes corrected to rectify the problem. The
primaries are under the control of the each Party and several counties have
no Party Chairman. Here is a link to an article about the problem.

http://lubbockonline.com/election/2014-02-24/rural-counties-still-struggling-hold-democratic-primaries

Rural counties still struggling to hold Democratic primaries

snip
Of the 22 Texas counties without a Democratic Party chairman, nine are in the
Panhandle/South Plains region, according to the state party. Despite the new law,
in most of those counties, people wanting to vote in the Democratic primary can’t cast
a ballot, unless they vote in the GOP primary.
*****

On the Republican side, only four counties in the state don’t have a party chairman and
of those only sparsely populated Irion County, in the San Angelo area, is in West Texas.

end snips

Is it not stunning that Loving County (pop. 71) a.) would have both a Republican party chairman and a Demmocrat party chairman and b.) could produce both a Republican and a Democrat party primary...and record ten votes for governor in each primary?

Greg Abbott.....8 votes
Lisa Fritsch....0
Mirian Martinez.1
SECEDE Kilgore..1

Wendy Davis.....6 votes
Ray Madrigal....4

All things considered, a pretty diverse electorate...
