Was your German doll this one?

Thanks for looking that up. Seems valid.

the side view "average" Barbie looks grotesquely fat.

Only because as a society we're conditioned by models, actresses, others shaping our vision of beauty who are grotesquely thin. It's a guy thing....you look at the side-by-side figures and say new Barbie is fat. It's mostly because she's wearing the clothes that were designed to look good on anemic Barbie.

steve85, if that new Barbie were an a solid color no-frills bathing suit that emphasized her curves, you'd be drooling!

"Apparently the Barbie Doll though is way too skinny from what I hear. A more realistic approach with this other doll for girls doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me. "

You'll never hear me opine that bony women look better than women with natural curves. And I don't mean the modern redefinition of "curves", which is another way of saying fat....I mean a feminine shape, with a bustline, a small waist, and a decent butt. I was once very thin, but I much prefer my female shape.

But, good grief, Barbie is just a doll. When my little friends and I used to play with our Barbies back in the early '70s, not one of us gave a thought to whether she was too skinny. She was just something to hang clothes on....and still is.

Just curious - why is your 3-yr. old playing with Barbies and not baby dolls?

First of all, I don’t know if you’re trying to age me prematurely by calling me steve85 instead of steve86 (just kidding).

Everything else you say may be true.

Real girls are beautiful just the way they are.

Yep. I don't know whose idea it was to give Barbie those ridiculous proportions, but they've always been a turn-off to me. Real girls and women are so much more beautiful.

I should clarify first that she’s almost 4, and is very bright. She does have a baby doll too, as well as a bunch of Hot Wheels, a whole herd of stuffed animals, a tricycle, and a toy bow-and-arrow that she frequently uses to “strike down” the refrigerator (one of her favorite movies is an animated version of the Ramayana, where Prince Rama strikes down the Demon King Raavan with his bow). She doesn’t really “play” with the Barbies yet, as in acting out scenes and situations. Mostly she is learning how to dress them.

However, she’s already able to log on to the computer in our house by herself (that includes a 7-letter password) where she watches videos and fools around with Celestia (a Linux astronomy program). She does still watch the usual toddler shows like (old) Sesame Street and Dora and so on, but she also enjoys action movies, and actually “gets” at least some of the humor in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean. She stomped around the house the whole day declaring that she was Davy Jones after watching that one. She has started “telling” basic stories with her Hot Wheels, so I expect it won’t be long before she starts actually playing out stories with her Barbies.
