Initial Reaction

Nonfarm Payrolls rose by 175,000 vs. a Bloomberg consensus expectation of 150,000.

The employment change for December 2013 was revised up by 9,000 (from +75,000 to +84,000), and the employment change for January 2014 was revised up by 16,000 (from +113,000 to +129,000). The overall effect was a modest two-month upward revision of +25,000.

Beneath the surface, things look worse again. The household survey shows a gain of employment of only 42,000 while unemployment rose by 223,000.

When discussions are held concerning Maine’s secession, often times the question is asked, “are you freer now than you were 20 years ago? Are you more financially stable today than you were 20 years ago?” “Are you kids better educated than you were? Were you better educated than your parents? Do you want your children to grow up free or enslaved to govt?”

Nothing is going in the right direction folks, we are not better off than we were 20 years ago, are you?

I fail to see how first time claims for unemployment numbers that this government trots out each month is relevant to anything positive? If it was zero we still need millions of jobs to be created a feat that obonma z ministration is incapable of recognition much less facilitating.

Paid liars figure again, and their enablers in the media push this farce in their headlines. When every family in the USA has an unemployed or underemployed member or close friend, who do they think they are kidding?

The economy doesn’t help Staples or Best Buy, or Sears, or Penney, but they would be contracting anyway. Their business model is being undermined by e-commerce.

Agree. The gov’t CANNOT CREATE jobs; it can only LET JOBS BE CREATED. All that they try to do (even in the few cases where well-intentioned) makes the jobs/economic situation worse.

20 years ago I was making far less money and married to a Cast Iron B!+ch. I’m married to the woman of my dreams now with two kids and a happy life, so Yes I am better off.

It’s my children who won’t have the opportunities I had who won’t be better off, and that’s the evil that deficit spending has spawned.

Gain of employment of only 42,000 and 13,000 were government jobs.

And that my friend is the crux of the matter, that is what is the driving and decisive reason many join Maine's secession movement. For once folks are really doing something 'for the children'.
