SEVASTOPOL, UKRAINE - Dozens of military trucks transporting heavily armed soldiers rumbled over Crimea's rutted roads Saturday as Russia reinforced its armed presence on the disputed peninsula in the Black Sea. Moscow's foreign minister ruled out any dialogue with Ukraine's new authorities, whom he dismissed as the puppets of extremists.
The Russians have denied their armed forces are active in Crimea, but an Associated Press reporter trailed one military convoy Saturday afternoon from 40 kilometres west of Feodosia to a military airfield at Gvardeiskoe north of Simferopol, over which a Russian flag flew.
Some of the army green vehicles had Russian license plates and numbers indicating that they were from the Moscow region. Some towed mobile kitchens and what appeared to be mobile medical equipment.

CA guy is stark mad. He posted the same drivel on many FR threads.
Is there any evidence that the base was in any danger?
YES.
The far-right deputies in the puschists Ukrainian parliment proposed a law to abolish the treaty concerning the lease Russia has on Sebastopol military base in Crimea until 2042.”
The same thing was tried by the Western Ukrainian-supported government of Yuschenko-Timoshenko, which, in 2009, said that the lease will not be prolonged and the Russia fleet should leave Sevastopol in 2017. Now the illegitimate government in Kiev repeats the same threats. That’s why Russia decided to secure its Black Sea fleet, which was founded in 1783 - more than 200 years ago.
And since Europe isn’t protecting the Ukraine, why should they give two F’s?
Would you put up with that crap so we could send Canada oil, especially if they just looked on in an invasion of their oil providing buddies?
What you said about Europe doesn’t matter at all. Where is Europe protecting them if they CARE so much?
Well then more better the Ukranians blow up some pipelines IMO.
Well they can depend on Russia for most of it’s invasion as well.
Your choice of words (though ineptly spelled) exposes your political leanings. Do you think the USSR should be redeemed from the ash heap of history?
Isn’t Russia at war now by invading where they want at will?

George Bush was just as globalist as the rest and did some pretty bad things, and is one of the reasons we’re in the spot we’re in today. I’m growing weary of people saying how much they miss him or how great he was.
Calvin Coolidge was a good president if you want to be specific.
Until everyone stops blaming whoever, nothing will change.

Would be a shame if a great white happened along heh.
I wouldn’t say other NATO countries have negligible armed forces, that would be a mistake to ever assume that.
Nobody is going to do anything about Crimea because nobody has the parts to do anything about it.
I’m not in favour of getting involved with anything, we have our own security to shore up.
I understand they were legitimate bases; our media is spinning this as though Russian troops simply poured across the eastern border of Ukraine (as opposed to simply walking out their front gate). I’m not defending, just clarifying Russia’s actions. After the invasion of Georgia a few years ago, Russia should be viewed as a potential enemy of the West (if that represents anything anymore).
Looks like the Serbs that were left to fend for themselves when the former segments of Yugoslavia were turned over to their own ethnic majorities (Bosnian, Croat, Slovenians).
“I wouldnt say other NATO countries have negligible armed forces”
Why not? It’s the stark truth.
There are (on paper) 28 countries members of NATO.
Total of military expenditure per year - $1,038 billion (for all 28), the US military expenditure for 2011 - $732 billion, thus the total of the 27 other members is $266 billion.
US active military personnel - 1,477,896.
Iceland’s (member of NATO) - 210.
Latvia’s (member of NATO) - 6,000.
Let’s be candid: Except the UK and France military, the other members of NATO in Europe count for peanuts, their “importance” lies only in the fact that the US army may use their territories for their own goals.
“After the invasion of Georgia a few years ago”
It never happened. It was Georgian army, which invaded the South Ossetia, trying to attach it to the rest of Georgia. The SO called Russia to help, and Russia army pushed the Georgians back. Russia never “invaded” Georgia.
“During the night of 7 to 8 August 2008, Georgia launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia, in an attempt to reclaim the territory ... The Georgian attack caused casualties among Russian peacekeepers, who resisted the assault along with Ossetian militia. Georgia successfully captured most of Tskhinvali within hours. Russia reacted by deploying units of the Russian 58th Army and Russian Airborne Troops into South Ossetia one day later, and launched airstrikes against Georgian forces in South Ossetia and military and logistical targets in Georgia proper.”

BTW, Georgia has NEVER been part of the “West”, whatever that could mean nowadays. Lately I read somewhere that Turkey is a “Western” country. WHERE does the “West” end?
“Russia should be viewed as a potential enemy of the West”
Why that? Which Western countries has the Russian Federation ever attacked?
Lots of one on one hoops action with Reggie
