A Chinese family successfully rang the mobile phone of a passenger on board Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 which is still missing after it lost contact with the ground on Saturday.
A video clip of a man dialing the number of his elder brother was shown on Beijing Television's news bulletin. The call got connected, but no one picked up.
The man, who did not give his name, spoke to reporters at a Malaysia Airlines briefing in Beijing. He claimed that he made a total of three calls, but no one answered.
Desperate family members have asked Malaysia Airlines to use satellite technology to pick up the mobile phone signals of passengers before their phones run out of batteries.
I think that's the key. If it's 'ringing' the phone is still operating. Guess our NSA, FBI, and Homeland are too busy checking out the 'vast right wing conspiracy' to bother with this kind of stuff.
The call will be answered by Mr. Sharkey or Mr. Fisk.

There might be a technical explanation as to why they heard the phone ringing, even if it had been destroyed. I think what we have here is a case where this family, as well as the family members of all the other passengers, are desperately trying to find some ray of hope to cling to, and the fact that the phone rang fills that need for them.

Except in the case of a cell phone in water. That equals a dead cell phone. Or more accurately, a shorted out battery.
The ringing you hear when you call someone’s phone isn’t their phone ringing. It’s just a system generated ring indicating that the system is attempting to ring the remote phone.
Also a commercial aircraft puts out IFF signals. Identification Friend or Foe. I don’t know if foreign airliners have that. It’s used to eliminate confusion for military aircraft and identify the aircraft to air traffic controllers. If high jackers don’t know about this it may still be picked up by satellite. Can the black box be picked up by GPS or sonar?
It seems like the disappearance isn’t even in the news much anymore, that’s odd. You’d think it would be almost 24/7 coverage but it’s not.
Dunno. Could it be parked intact on the ocean bed ?
Lots of folks have LifeProof brand cases but would sink unless a purse/bag/body keeps it afloat

If its a Muslim terrorist event of course it has to be hushed up or people will wake up and start asking questions.

Continental US you are required to turn your cell phone off in flight! This may not apply to Malaysian Air?
