The nations in that part of the world have been long at each other’s throats and that’s still the Russian mentality. Russia has gotten trounced more than once, and their idea of recovery is to go trounce someone else in a zero sum game. Christianity brought a positive sum game to the world, but it’s gotten pretty short shrift on this sad mortal coil lately.
