Sowell: The Left Versus Minorities
Creators Syndicate ^ | March 11, 2014 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 03/10/2014 1:03:26 PM PDT by jazusamo

If anyone wanted to pick a time and place where the political left's avowed concern for minorities was definitively exposed as a fraud, it would be now — and the place would be New York City, where far left Mayor Bill de Blasio has launched an attack on charter schools, cutting their funding, among other things.

These schools have given thousands of low income minority children their only shot at a decent education, which often means their only shot at a decent life. Last year 82 percent of the students at a charter school called Success Academy passed city-wide mathematics exams, compared to 30 percent of the students in the city as a whole.

Why would anybody who has any concern at all about minority young people — or even common decency — want to destroy what progress has already been made?

One big reason, of course, is the teachers' union, one of Mayor de Blasio's biggest supporters. But it may be more than that. For many of the true believers on the left, their ideology overrides any concern about the actual fate of flesh-and-blood human beings.

Something similar happened on the west coast last year. The American Indian Model Schools in Oakland have been ranked among the top schools in the nation, based on their students' test scores. This is, again, a special achievement for minority students who need all the help they can get.

But, last spring, the California State Board of Education announced plans to shut this school down!

Once people learn how to think, it is hard to pour leftist mush into their brains.

Liberal solution: close down places which teach critical thinking skills.

The net result is that public schools are often run as if their main function is to provide jobs to teachers. Whether the children get a decent education is secondary, at best.

“When school children start paying union dues, that's when I'll start representing the interests of school children.”

Albert Shanker, former NYC teachers' union boss.

de Blasio/Left places the selfish interests of the teachers' unions over the very lives of minority young people ...

Our ideology (and PENSIONS!) override any concern about the actual fate of you ungrateful flesh-and-blood human beings.

Amen to that...Leftism cannot survive with people that can think for themselves.

Why would anybody who has any concern at all about minority young people — or even common decency — want to destroy what progress has already been made?

The answer, Mr. Sowell, is contained within the question.

Mr. de Blasio HAS no concern at all about minority young people, nor does he have a single shred of common decency.

He is, to be blunt, a worthless piece of garbage.

The people de Blasio is harming helped put him in office.

This is a repeat of the Obama elections.

Some people never learn.

Too bad innocent people have to suffer from the stupidity of the easily fooled.

Charter schools are a slap in the face to the Liberal Education Industry. And everyone knows it.

If poor children can be taught in Charter Schools it means ‘public’ schools are failing those same types of students. It also means the excuse that it’s ‘the parents fault’ isn’t necessarily true.

The Education Industry don’t like being shown up...

I still love him, but after Sowell attacked Cruz and preached GOP-e theology a bit, he does not carry quite the same zing as before.

I don’t dislike him, ok?

I’m just wondering HOW he wrote that stuff.

I was deeply shocked.

You nailed that.

By and large charter schools have put public schools to shame in large cities with large numbers of minorities.

The NEA and their affiliates cannot deny the truth of that so they are determined to have those charter schools done away with.

DeBlasio started out as a committed leftist. Now, he’s a typical corrupt political hack, who has used leftist rhetoric and the Democratic left party to achieve power. But, as a hack, he has to give back to his power backers, and the NEA is a big one.

Charter schools, as a performing alternative to the union-run regular schools, are a potential threat to the teachers’ union. Can’t have that.

A similar analysis of paying back the big money backers seems to apply with the horse-carriages. The issue wasn’t the horses, or the livelihood of the drivers. Apparently, the big horse and carriage garage sits on valuable land coveted by developers that DeBlasio is friendly with.

You can say this about him: He tries to pay back his political debts promptly, although without any subtlety.
